Halloween and Sunday connected

Kelly Stewart

Staff Writer

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that it’s weird that Halloween is on a Sunday this year? Of course, that is just how the calendar days fell, I know, but it seems like Sunday and Halloween just don’t mix.

For me, Sunday has been traditionally about dressing up nicely, going to church and generally being solemn and polite the entire day. It seems funny that Halloween fell on a Sunday this year, because Halloween is all about dressing up in weird costumes and acting like an idiot for an entire night.

But the funny thing is some aspects of Halloween are influenced by a Catholic celebration, All Saints’ Day that was made specifically to replace the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain. It was celebrated by lighting bonfires, parades and wearing costumes of saints and angels. When many Europeans began immigrating to the new world, they brought the celebration with them, and it slowly began to take on a more secular meaning.
