Wrestling team floors competition in Arkansas
By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor Between volleyball matches in San Marcos, football games in Midland and more, Coppell High School’s many sports teams really do seem to cover a lot of Texas ground every year. But as much as the Cowboys and Cowgirls traverse the state, very rarely do Coppell’s student athletes ever have the opportunity to compete outside Texas borders. On Dec. 11, Coppell Wrestling had a chance to do just that. The varsity boys travelled to Rogers, Arkansas this weekend to take on 18 other wrestling teams from Texas, Arkansas and Missouri in the annual NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) duels. The Cowboys competed on Saturday and Sunday and finished in 3rd place, proving that Coppell…
Wrestling team ready to take down competition this season
By Seth Slover Staff Writer When an individual or a group desires to excel at something, goals have to be in place and the bar has to be set high from the start. With a new season recently underway, the Coppell wrestling team has its expectations set as high as ever. “We have two goals this season, as always,” coach Chip Lowery said. “We want to win district and qualify as many kids as we can for all-state.” Thus far, it seems as though the team is in line to achieve a great deal of success, as boys varsity, girls varsity and junior varsity all took first place at the recent Round-Up tournament. It is…
Two sport athletes common theme in Coppell athletics
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer Many of the top athletes at Coppell have been committed to multiple sports. In most recent memory that would be Tyler Landis, Nate Hruby, and Brandon Mullins who all excelled at not only football but also lacrosse. The two-sport athlete is not something new to Coppell. Many athletes choose to participate in sports to not only fill up some time between season but also to help them train for their favorite sport. “My love is football,” sophomore Killian Bresnahan said. “Wrestling gets me stronger and builds stamina and track keeps me in shape and fast for football.” Bresnahan is a rare type of athlete involved and excelling in not only…
Wrestling goes to state, Robinson takes sixth place
by Chase Porter and Coleman Armes Staff Writers For the past few years, Coppell High School has been a wrestling powerhouse. This year, the wrestling team entered eight competitors into the UIL State Wrestling Tournament at Austin in attempts to pin the competition for a state title. Last year, during the 2009- 2010 season, the wrestling team won district and also finished second in the region. The team sent six competitors to the state tournament, held Feb. 25-26, with five of the six placing. Many of these wrestlers that went to state last year graduated and now this year’s wrestlers took up the reins and sent four varsity guys and four varsity girls to the…
Wrestling team pins competition to the mat
Chase Porter Staff Writer Coming off a successful season a year ago, the Coppell wrestling team plans to pin this season’ competitors to the mat. In 2009, the Coppell High School boy’s varsity team won district and achieved second in the region. The team also sent six wrestlers to the state tournament last year and had an impressive run. Five of the six wrestlers placed in the tournament, making the Cowboys wrestling team a worthy opponent for anyone that faces them in this year’s upcoming season. “I think we’re going to do pretty good,” wrestling coach Robinson said. “Even though some good [wrestlers] guys graduated last year we have some more leaders coming up and…
Johnson tackles a new challenge: wrestling
By Gaby Moran Staff Writer With the size of Coppell High School’s student population, this only allows most students to do well in just one sport. However, there are always a handful of students that can shine in a couple of sports each year, but only a very few that can shine enough to get college scholarship offers in more than one. Senior Teddy Johnson, mainly known for his incredible football talent, which earned him a spot on the Oklahoma State University football team, also picked up a new sport this year and performed very well. Usually, athletes work hard for four years to reach state, with one exception. This year, Johnson joined a sport…
