Distractions lead to destructive driving
By Ben Cowlishaw Online Copy Editor Students are often warned about the dangers of multiple driving distractions, including texting while driving and having too many friends in the car. These points are often rehashed to the point that they lose meaning, until someone actually experiences an accident that can be attributed to not focusing on the road with hands at ten-and-two. Getting in a car accident at a young age has multiple ramifications to begin with. Possible injuries, repairs and skyrocketing insurance costs are always threats when a teenager is involved in a wreck. If it is found that the driver at fault was distracted, it throws in the potential of further punishment from the…
Texting in class can connect students to serious trouble
By Kristen Shepard Staff Writer It is the same case everyday: a monotonous lecture by that teacher whose voice bores you to death. It seems almost impossible not to pull out your phone and send a quick message to your friend or parent or boyfriend. Before you know it, you’ve texted up a storm, all in the middle of class. Even if your teacher doesn’t spot you, texting in class can lead to serious problems in school and later in life. Whether it is a quick message to your parents about tutoring or a shout-out to your best friend, texting in class is controversial to teachers, parents and students. And in an age where texting…
Oprah’s message hits home
Allie Perison Editor in Chief I was dreading MAPS class this week. I had heard about the Oprah episode we were going to watch and admit I was a little irritated. I am not proud to say that I am guilty of texting while driving. There have been multiple occasions that I have found myself unable to wait to reply to whoever is on the other end of the phone. The ironic thing is that I pride myself in thinking I am a safe driver, but this weeks MAPS proved me wrong. As I watched that Oprah episode I was reminded of how much I am putting at risk, not only my life, but other…
CHS students join fight against texting while driving
Frances Ruiz Staff Writer/Photographer Jumping over a curb, swerving into an adjacent lane, or rear ending the car in front of you. No doubt accidents and mistakes like these have happened to all of us, but how many can be attributed to texting while driving? As teenagers, we live and breath by Dostoyevsky’s “superman theory”. We stay out all hours because there is nothing and no one out there that can harm us. We speed down the streets of Denton Tap and MacArthur because we can handle anything that may suddenly come our way. We text and talk on the phone while driving because we are capable of handling both. Truth is: we aren’t above anyone in our limitations and…

By Julia Kim Staff Writer Tuesday, Jan. 12. A day most will forget; a day most Haitians will never forget. Relief efforts have expanded in multiple ways just three days after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti. Typical aid comes in forms of monetary donations to the American Red Cross and item donations to organizations. This time, technology is catching up with text messages. This mobile campaign has become an easy and popular way to donate in just a matter of days and has raised more than $10 million. All four major wireless carriers – Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint – are supporting this…
