Introduction into Buffy

As a rule, I’m interested in anything Josh Whedon related, Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing A-Long Blog, even Dollhouse. However, for the longest time I avoided Buffy: The Vampire Slayer which was his first TV series. For a multitude of reasons, but mainly because it just seemed like another cheesy fantasy show. It is not. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is many things including a high school drama, distillation on destiny, and an awesome action showcase. No hyperbole, it’s probably one of the best television shows of the deacde.  Buffy: The Vampire Slayer starts out with us meeting Buffy( Sarah Michelle Gellar) at her house as she wakes up from a dream (wherein an old vampire the…

As “Sesame Street” ages, audience changes

By Mary Whitfill Staff Writer Nov. 10 marks the 40th anniversary of the beloved program “Sesame Street”, the longest running children’s show in television history. Premiering in 1969, the show was originally created to be an educational television show – a revolutionary idea at the time. Rather than a substitute for reading and mathematics lessons, the show was created to teach children how to be good people and show learning can be fun. The original episodes are available on DVD, now available for purchase, but they include an unusual disclaimer for parents and other adults. The warning reads: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups and may not suit the needs of today’s…

“Community” one of the best new comedy series

By Rebecca Fowler Staff Writer Community college.  It’s a great place for transitioning from high school into the real world or to a university, and it also serves as a last chance for adults who wish to learn more.  However, over the years it has become a joke. This could not be made more evident than in NBC’s new TV show “Community.” While poking fun at all the stereotypes, including the high school jock stuck in the past, the gossipy and overly-cheery mom and the rich older man seeking youth again, “Community” manages to keep it both funny and real.  The show, while quirky and simple, enforces values of friendship and honesty.  Though the characters…

ABC gains comedy cred with Modern Family and The Middle

Usually, when I need a comedy fix, I watch shows on NBC like “The Office” and “30 Rock”. Sometimes I watch “Two and-a-Half Men” and “How I met your Mother” on CBS. I’ll even turn to Comedy Central to improve my mood, but never have I ever watched ABC for its comedy. Well, until now at least. ABC is now coming out with comedies that I can stand to watch. For example, “The Middle” is about a typical American family. And when I say ‘typical’ I mean relatable. At one point, the main character, Patricia Heaton’s Frankie, tells her kids that they need to eat as a family. They then proceed to bring their food into the…

Gossip Girl fails to excite

Staff Writer Paige Wilson This week Gossip Girl failed to deliver its usual jaw dropping excitment. In fact this season’s ratings are falling from previous ones. Everything seems to be repeating and things that are supose to deliver are falling flat. This week we saw Gorgenia and Dan “hook up”. In Dan’s eyes it is nothing serious while Gorgenia is going into crazy stalker mode. It is just a repeat from the ending of season one.  Instead of stalking Dan and ruining Serena’s life she is stalking Dan and ruining Blair’s life. Scott chose to tell Rufus he was his son’s brother instead of telling him that he really is his son. Then he just…
