Abusing technology leads to consequences

Corrina Taylor Staff Writer In this day and age, computers and technology are a privilege sometimes taken for granted. After a long day of school, a student can whip out their laptop, iPad, or smart phone and peruse the web. The Internet is available on a whim and is never construed with negative effects beyond the problems of chatting with strangers. Unfortunately there is another item to add to the list of things to watch out for on the Internet. Normally when browsing through embarrassing, or perhaps inappropriate, websites it is easy for one to simply delete the computer’s history and assume no harm is done. However, this is not the case. “As we go…

New year brings waste, electronics recycling program

By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor The arrival of Christmas season always seems to signal a frenzy to procure the latest technologies. For the citizens of Coppell, 2011 was no different - thousands across the city received items such as the Kindle Fire and the Apple TV. Outdated gadgets of years past have been quickly replaced by their updated counterparts and are no longer needed. But what are people supposed to do with their old computers or television sets? That’s what Coppell’s electronics recycling program has been introduced to address. The “At Your Door Special Collection” was put into effect at the start of November and is now reaching its busiest stretch: the weeks following Christmas. In a partnership with Waste Management,…

Keep Coppell Beautiful hosts eco-friendly events

It is time to stop and appreciate technology

Coleman Armes Staff Writer Earlier today someone said that the original iPhone was being handed out for free by some phone companies. If that is true or not it does not matter but it sure made me think and appreciate the technology that we have. Think back to 2007 when the first iPhone came out and everyone thought it was a huge deal with the touch screen, apps, iPod, actual phone, and so many other things put together into one device. Today with the recent release of the iPhone 4s, the original iPhone looks like just another old phone. This is all in the span of 4 years! New technology is coming out so fast…

Today’s tech

Graphic by Haley Madigan

By Sarah Police Staff Writer Let’s go back to the time when kids went outside to play for the love of the game. They would play for hours and hours without keeping score- just playing with each other and having fun. This generation, children are helping Tiny Wings soar the sky and assisting Phineas and Ferb with their summer shenanigans. Technology has been on the rise in the past couple of years and some people are even saying that this is the “technology decade.” But is all of this action with Angry Birds good for you? This advancement has led to many good things. Back in the 1980s and 90s computers took up full rooms…

Laptops become a backpack necessity

Why tediously record notes on paper when you can type them? Is it necessary to email work to someone when you can just give them your flash drive? And why use the dictionaries in your English class when Google operates in a matter of seconds? While NTH@C emphasizes the use of technology to as paramount, CHS also inhibits an increasing reliance on Macs and smartphones. Freshman year, I had maybe one or two teachers who weren’t finicky about electronics-the others were not afraid to keep it for the rest of the day, maybe even send it to the office. My junior year has blessed me with the privilege of having a schedule that only consists with…

Gears of War 3

By Chase Porter Staff Writer Today, September 20th, Epic games released the final installment of the extremely popular trilogy Gears of War 3. If you are not familiar with the game trilogy, this third person shooter series follows the main character Marcus Fenix and his team of soldiers, Delta Squad, through the apocalyptic world battling the Locust, which are alien, monster type things. I realize that was a very brief and confusing summary but this will make a lot more sense if you go to ign.com or just play the game yourself. For long time fans of the trilogy this is the moment we have been waiting for since 2006. The game looks extremely similar…

Benefits of space exploration worth the cost, Hair says

Graphic by Lauren Ussery.

By Thomas Hair Staff Writer School is back in session, and as usual, the first day included much discussion of everybody’s summer vacation adventures. All students know the drill. The teacher awkwardly introduces themself to the new class and asks each student to talk about what they did over the break. This year, you probably listened with fading interest as classmates mentioned their stay at a tropical island, or a month long Science Camp. But in the not-so-distant future, students might just come to class on the first day of school bragging about their trip to the Moon or even to Mars. While the notion of space tourism may seem light years away, its roots…
