Beat the Heat CHS

beattheheat-4

By Jordan Bickham Staff Writer The summer season ends with the start of school, but with temperatures soaring in the hundreds, summer seems endless, even when the vacation is over. As a freshman spending his last few weeks of summer marching under the sun, Matthew Thomas could not have anticipated how intense outdoor activities can be in Texas. “We practice four days a week, about three hours a day, and it is almost always outside,” Thomas said.  “I try to drink water outside of band.  You know, drink a cup of water instead of a can of coke, keeping your body cool and hydrated all the time.” But sometimes, water is just not enough. “During…

Doing nothing the key to mental health, Stewart says

Kelly Stewart Staff Writer Summer vacation is just around the corner, and many students are thinking of the fun and exciting vacations that they plan to take this year. However, even ‘vacation’ sometimes means just being stressed in a different place, with the family having to rush around and see everything they can before time is up. But what is really important about a summer vacation is the time to relax and do nothing except simple things like playing video games and watching TV. I think that sometimes, between duel credit summer school, summer jobs and college applications, many students forget that it is actually good to do nothing sometimes. Doing nothing and having no…

Girl Wonder is anything but wonderful

Girl Wonder photo

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer Before you read my review, it is essential to know I am a sappy romanticist; it’s all I read, and I gobble it up like a big piece of cherry pie every time. In Girl Wonder by Alexa Martin, you follow the story of Charlotte Locke, a typical girl with an unfortunate learning disorder. Like many students Locke strives to raise her GPA with every chance she gets, sadly her move from Tallahassee to Seattle literally gates her from the GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) program in her new school due to her disability. When she fails to be inducted into the most prestigious program offered at her school, Locke…

Senior’s last words

Ashley Attanucci Web Manager I am leaving Coppell High School. the past four years, almost a quarter of my lifetime, I have been part of this routine – school at 8:20 a.m., classes, friends, lunch, pep rallies, car pool, homework. It has become my life and the life I love. Now, suddenly, though I have known and looked forward to this fate since my first trip up the freshmen stairs, I am being pushed out of these halls I have come to know as a home away from home. And I don’t like it. After finally understanding the ins and outs of high school, I am forced to leave. Today, I can tell you where…

Northlake releases summer catalog

By Henna Khan Business Manager For those of you who are interested in getting ahead during the summer and putting some college credit hours under your belt, today is the day. Northlake has released their Summer I and Summer II catalogs on their website to allow students to start thinking about what classes to take, at what times and what campus. Registration will begin on April 25 where you can sign up for classes and meet with an advisor to talk out any issues. In the past two summers I have taken eight different classes and words cannot describe the satisfaction of being done with those classes in four weeks. The experience was indeed a…

False tanning methods radiate dangerous skin problems

Kara Adkins Staff Writer To escape the winter season, many girls at Coppell High School are turning to tanning beds in order to get that desired summer glow. However, the price of beauty, in this case, is very steep. Although many tan to look and feel better about themselves, there are serious health concerns with tanning. Tanning machines omit ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin cancer. If one tans frequently, it is even possible for them to receive up to 12 times the UV radiation they would receive from normal sun exposure.  With that said, teens still take the health risks as a grain of salt. “I just feel like I should always be tan….

Spider-man reboot officially named “The Amazing Spider-man”

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Web Manager It finally feels official. It finally feels real. Sony Pictures has released the name of Marc Webb’s (500 Days of Summer) Spider-man reboot. But alas, does the name make the film seem cheesy? Along with the news of the name, Sony Pictures has also released an official image for the movie. Sure, there are other images released, but this one is for promotion purposes and let me tell you, the picture is stunning. I’m really excited to see what Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), who plays the web-slinger can bring to the table. A website for the movie is also up and running with only a Facebook link to the…

Summer break not efficient schedule

By Mike Pankonien Staff Writer Summer vacation: what’s not to like? Two glorious months of total freedom; no school work, no teachers, no annoying kids blocking your way in the halls. Just you and whatever you want to do…that is until those two glorious months end and you’re hurled back into the school system. When students return to school having forgotten everything they were previously taught and fallen into a lax routine of laziness, is it really wise to postpone returning to school for two months? Wouldn’t a shorter summer be better? Don’t get me wrong, I’m anticipating for summer just as much as the next guy. But what leads to this wrecked condition of…
