Burgers are flipping, but grades are slipping

By Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer As students get older, numerous rights and responsibilities are bestowed upon them. They are given more freedom than they have ever known, while at the same time are more responsible for their own actions than they may be prepared for. Many students acquire an afternoon or weekend job for any number of reasons. Some need to save for a car or college, while others just want the extra cash. For some, however, they learn having a job with school, sleep and a social life can be more of a balancing act than they originally applied for. Junior Natalie Lamb, who works at Fat Daddy’s, thinks at times having a job…

CHS students play Battlefield 3 open beta

By Chase Porter Staff Writer Just days ago, DICE, the developer for Battlefield 3 released an open beat onto the Xbox live dashboard. This beta will be up for the next few weeks and I advice all fans of the game franchise to check it out. The beta for this first person shooter type game is available on the Xbox live dashboard and can be downloaded for free. The beta includes only one map and one game mode but most of the weapons and upgrades can be unlocked. The game so far looks great but some of the effects and graphics are a little sloppier than most fans would like to see. Fortunately, according to…

CHS students enjoying music in hallways

By Seth Slover Staff Writer One great improvement at Coppell High School this year is the fantastic music being played during passing periods.  Students have praised the variety of popular music entertaining them during the six minute time between classes. Perhaps one reason for the great music is the fact that the music being played has already been established as hit music.  Many of the top 100 songs of 2011 have been heard over the loudspeakers.  Songs vary from country to hip-hop, oldies to newer releases. CHS students, including myself, are thoroughly enjoying the music they are hearing.

Return of the ‘Claw and Antlers’

By Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer During last year’s historic postseason run for the Texas Rangers, many students could be seen supporting the team with jerseys, shirts and other fan gear. As the Rangers head into game three of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Tampa Bay Rays, students are once again anticipating an exciting October. Game one of the series, a 9-0 blow-out for the Rays, was disheartening for some students. Junior Madison Coleman was at the game, and quickly became concerned for the playoff future of the Rangers. “It was almost upsetting to see them lose so badly. Seeing CJ [Wilson] give up so many runs really crushed my hopes of having…

Distractions during the school day

By Chase Porter Staff Writer While analyzing a normal school of mine I realize that I am distracted from what I am actually supposed to be doing the majority of the time. Just think fellow classmates, what really distracts you while your at school? What do I consider to be the biggest distraction during my school day you ask? I’d have to say its definitely my phone. I never thought I’d say this but my phone is almost apart of me now and I’m sure that’s true for almost everyone with a smart phone. These phones aren’t just great for playing games, such as Fruit Ninja, my personal favorite, but with the incorporation of group…

CHS academics soar above other local high schools

Graphic courtesy coppellisd.com.

By Mary Whitfill Features Editor While new students tentatively walk the halls of unfamiliar schools and new policies are implemented into the interworking of administration, Pulitzer Prize winning public records website ProPublica released a school search database allowing community members to compare their school to others in the area. According to ProPublica, Coppell High School soars above local high schools in some areas, and falls below the bar in others. Coppell High School is currently home to around 2,680 students, more than any of the four closest high schools in surrounding areas. The ProPublica search engine allows users to compare things such as the percentage of Inexperienced Teachers, number of AP courses offered, and the…

Vera Bradley bags-Trend of the decade

I’ve always loved the 80′s. To be honest, I could have easily lived in that time period, considering I naturally love the music and style, and specialize in almost every film from that time period. It is weird to think how what was once considered a common trend then would be considered ‘vintage’ in 2011. This leads me to also think about what is considered stylish today and how our kids will think of it. For instance-Vera Bradley. Take a look around the classroom-I promise you will see at least three abstract floral bags with that label. Almost every girl at CHS owns either a Vera Bradley wallet, purse or school bag. Maybe even a…

The next generation: the children who won’t remember 9/11

By Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer The question “where were you when…” has become synonymous with September 11, 2001. However, the generation of children who will only learn about the events of 9/11 from TV specials, their parents and history textbooks is quickly growing. The senior class of 9/11, the graduating class of 2002, is now in their late 20’s, out of college and beginning their families. This year’s senior class witnessed the events through the eyes of a second grader, meaning the day was confusing and full of questions. Most significantly, this year’s freshmen, the class of 2015, were not actually in school that day. In the year before kindergarten, this group of mostly 4…

Special Education records to be destroyed in CISD

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer The Intervention Services department in Coppell Independent School District recently released a warning to parents/guardians of former CISD students whom pertained to the Special Education program that emphasized the districts plans to destroy Special Education records of students who were under the program during the 2001-2002, 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. These records include information relating to identification, evaluation, educational placement or provision of the Special Educations in the district. Modern Warfare 3 release

By Chase Porter Staff Writer This year continues to be a big year for online gaming and now CHS students are preparing for the newest installment of the Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare 3. The trailer was released only a few days ago but already it has caused a lot of buzz. The biggest debate with the announcement of this sequel is can this new game improve from the past games? No one can say for sure yet but on May 23 the game creators will release the official launch trailer during the Western Conference Finals. This will give CHS students a much better look at the game and will hopefully give away some…
