Summer quickly approaching for CHS

Kara Adkins Staff Writer With spring break now out of sight, Coppell high school students are quickly approaching the end of the school year.  With approximately 11 weeks of school left, including finals week, it’s time for students to finish the school year off right.  Spring break included many vacation destinations, the most popular being the beach for some sun or the mountains for skiing and snowboarding. Returning from break, many students have adopted a much wanted summer glow and others tried to grasp on to the last traces of winter by tearing apart the slopes. For lucky groups of students at CHS, their Spring Break was spent in spots such as Italy, Chicago and…

Coppell teams to stay active during break

Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor While most Coppell students will be spending their breaks on vacation, several Cowboys and Cowgirl’s sports teams will be spending their time off playing in district games. The Coppell baseball and softball teams each have two games over the break against 7-5A teams. The Cowboys will take on Denton Guyer at home on Tuesday night and will travel to Keller to play Fossil Ridge on Friday. The Cowgirls will play Justin Northwest on the road on Tuesday before hosting Keller Central on Friday night. Both boys and girls soccer teams also have games. The Cowboys kickoff the break tonight with a pivotal game in Southlake against the first place Dragons, and…

How to have an eco-friendly vacation

Kelly Stewart Staff Writer Many of you may be traveling, or planning to travel this spring break. But some may not know that you can be eco-friendly while you travel. Here are a few ways to do just that! Before you leave the house, be sure to turn off the air conditioner. Not only will this save you a lot of money, but also it will save energy while there is no one in the house. Another thing is to be sure to unplug all of your computers and other appliances. According to ABC news, even while on standby, these machines can still drain energy, which accounts for up to five percent of the total…

False tanning methods radiate dangerous skin problems

Kara Adkins Staff Writer To escape the winter season, many girls at Coppell High School are turning to tanning beds in order to get that desired summer glow. However, the price of beauty, in this case, is very steep. Although many tan to look and feel better about themselves, there are serious health concerns with tanning. Tanning machines omit ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin cancer. If one tans frequently, it is even possible for them to receive up to 12 times the UV radiation they would receive from normal sun exposure.  With that said, teens still take the health risks as a grain of salt. “I just feel like I should always be tan….

CHS choirs prepare for trip to Italy

by Lauren Ussery Centerspread Editor Video by Jen Olsen Spring Break 2011 will be an eventful one for many students at Coppell High School, with the band heading to Chicago and the Lariettes traveling to New York City. However, none of these trips can quite compare to what choir has in store. For many CHS varsity choir students, Spring Break will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a trip to Italy to perform at the Vatican. The choir generally travels abroad every three years, to New York every two years, and makes a local trip for the other years. This schedule ensures that four-year choir students have at least one opportunity to travel abroad during their…

Students and teachers anticipate ‘Smart’ 2010-11 school year

by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer As students know, Smart Boards were installed over spring break in several teachers’ classrooms. The boards, however, were not connected until just recently and even with the little curriculum left to teach, teachers are making good use of their new technology. From jeopardy games to throwing Koosh balls at the screen to drawing diagrams, Smart Boards have a purpose in every class subject.  “They just finally got it hooked up for me so I’ve still been playing with it,” social studies teacher Michael Brock said. “The things I’ve been using with it most is being able to draw movement or directions on the map.”  Teachers are mostly excited for the…

The Black Eyed Peas come to Dallas

Rebecca Neumann Staff Writer The Black Eyed Peas have dished out some pretty incredible chart-topping singles, but could they also be amazing live performers? The answer, as I learned at their American Airlines concert on Mar. 19, is an over-whelming ‘yes’. I arrived about an hour before the concert began and was surprised to see the parking lot mostly empty, concession lines short and the majority of the stadium seats vacant. By the time Ludacris, the opening act, took the stage, the stadium was only about half filled, though he made the most of the audience and put on a decent show with his hit “Moneymaker”. However, between the two performances a rush of people…

Muse make spring break the best ever

Over the spring break week, English rock band Muse along with American band Silversun Pickups stopped in Texas on their busy tour to perform in Fort Worth and Houston with a surprise show in Austin. With a sister who is an avid Muse fan, it wasn’t enough to only go to the Fort Worth show so when tickets went on sale a few months ago, we snagged some for the Houston show as well. Their first Texas stop as at the Fort Worth Convention Center on the 17th. Having general admission tickets meant we needed to get their early and after hearing that fans had been waiting outside the venue since midnight, my sister and I headed over their 5…

CHS students travel to Spain for break

by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer Coppell High School’s tradition of a Spain trip over sping break is continuing this year. Eleven students and Spanish teacher Janine Kay will be traveling to the country of Spain for a week-long adventure. The group has been planning for over a year to visit the Spanish-speaking country to immerse themselves in a new culture, touring, tasting and most of all speaking Spanish. They will leave tomorrow morning on a 14-hour flight and return Sunday just before the start of school. Planned activities include visiting museums, monuments, walks and tours, shopping and eating at restaurants. The best part about the Spain trip, aside from a grand experience in a foreign country…
