7-5A week one football predictions
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer District play kicks off friday for all teams in district 7-5A so here are the previews for the games: Denton Guyer vs. Justin Northwest Despite a rapidly improving team from their 0-10 season a couple years ago this should be an easy first district win for Guyer. The Wildcats already have quality wins over Garland and Mesquite Horn and lost a tough game against a highly ranked Cedar Hill team. Denton Guyers high powered offense will be too much for Northwest to handle. Denton Guyer 48, Justin Northwest 10 Saginaw vs. Coppell Saginaw is another team that is steadily improving after a rough first season in 5A but they…
Cowgirls defeated in three games by Lady Dragons
By Seth Slover Staff Writer As Coppell fans filed in to the gym for the highly anticipated volleyball matchup with rival Southlake Carroll, red t-shirts were handed out to the first 600 cowgirl fans to show up. The home side was packed full with enthusiastic fans. Yours truly caught Bear Bass’s ball that was thrown into the stands! Senior guys lead the students in chants that got the crowd pumped up. However, the level of initial confidence in a victory soon diminished after a poor start. The tone set at the beginning of game one was one that persisted throughout the entire match. Two words: Janelle Jenkins. This Southlake senior, number 15, dominated the game…
Cowgirls remain undefeated in District, Southlake next
Thomas Hair Staff Writer The football season is just now getting off the ground, but the girls on the CHS Volleyball team have been grinding out wins since the beginning of August. The Cowgirls built up an impressive 22-6 record in pre-district play, easily winning the Allen Tournament along the way. For the volleyball team, the start of September brought with it the start of District play. With 3-0 victories over Keller, Fossil Ridge and Keller Central already under the belt, the Cowgirls are undefeated in District thus far. Tomorrow night at 6:30 the squad will defend their 3-0 record against the Southlake Carroll Dragons, renowned as one of the best volleyball teams in the…
New football season brings new opportunities, challenges for Cowboys
Thomas Hair Staff Writer Until the final second of the final game, last year’s Coppell Cowboys football season was a glorious one. Characterized by colossal victories and a District 7-5A title, last season cemented Coppell’s place as one of the elite football programs in the state. Saying that there is pressure for this year’s team to succeed would be a massive understatement. “The expectations are really high since the guys from last year really put us on the map,” sophomore defensive back Troy Parker said. “So everyone’s really looking up to that for us to keep our record up.” But this year’s team is not the same as its predecessors. The Cowboys lost many starters…
Successful debuts for CHS golf teams; school record broken
Thomas Hair Staff Writer Under the direction of coaches Richardson and Galbraith, the Coppell Golf team has steadily constructed a tradition of excellence. After only their first tournaments, this season’s golf team is already looking to be one of the greatest to don a Cowboy uniform. The varsity boys ventured to Lubbok for the Red Raider Fall Classic this past Friday, and managed to break a school record with a team score of 1 under par after the first day of competition. Coppell sagged a bit after day one and fell back to third place - before rallying to eclipse Frenship HS in the final strokes to claim 2nd place behind Southlake Carroll. Eric Ver Duin and Daniel Dickens…
Coppell football looks to repeat success in District
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer After going a perfect 7-0 in district last year and winning their first district title ever in a record-breaking season, this young Cowboy football team has high expectations to live up to. “We absolutely have a target on our back,” Coppell coach Joe McBride said. “We are the team to beat.” In order to repeat last year’s success, Coppell will have to shut down opposing offenses early, something they have struggled with already through its first two nondistrict games. This is the main difference from last year’s dominant defensive team, but improving their game will be key in match ups against Denton Guyer and Southlake Carroll. Both will be taking…
Baseball Team continues winning streak, nears end of regular season
Thomas Hair Staff Writer It has been a long season for the Coppell Cowboys Baseball Team. The Cowboys have played 33 games over the course of the year, and now, they are finally coming down the home stretch with only one game remaining. It has also been an extremely successful season for Don English’s squad, with a record of 25-6-2 being one of the best for the team in recent years. The Cowboys’ dominance all year long has launched them into high positions on the State and National high school baseball rankings. On Saturday April 23, the Cowboys stretched their winning streak to five games with a 13-1 beat down of the Naaman Forest Rangers….
Eight run first inning propels Cowboys to easy victory
After allowing two runs in each of the first two innings, the Cowboys were able to rebound for a 12-4 victory over the Saginaw Rough Riders. The eight run thrashing gives Coppell its sixth district win, positioning itself in second place in District 7-5A behind Southlake, which is undefeated in district. Conversely, the outcome keeps Saginaw defeated on the season with eleven straight loss. Sophmore Austin Gardener started the game off, giving up 4 earned runs off the bat, but senior Hunter Boyle provided 3.1 innings of flawless relief as the Saginaw bats were then silenced. The Coppell bats were even hotter early in the contest as the lineup ripped off eight first inning scores, shooting off…

Race to Nowhere hits Coppell
Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer With school being such a big contributing factor of stress among students a nation-wide, six month screening of the film Race to Nowhere has opened America‘s minds and hearts. Being active participants, Coppell set forth multiple screenings on campuses all over Coppell Independent School District (CISD) which undoubtedly made an impact. “I went to the screening, and I just started crying,” Marilyn Ambrose said. “It is a very harsh reality that we have come to face.” The Race to Nowhere follows the story of burned-out young individuals across the nation who have been pushed to the brink, along with educators who feel that students aren’t developing needed skills and parents whom wish to do the best…
