PSAT scores are in for Juniors

by Chase Porter Staff Writer On Oct. 12, the junior class began their first steps toward college and senior year by taking the PSAT or the practice SAT. This test is just a taste of the actual SAT that most of the juniors will be taking later this school year and early this upcoming summer. The PSAT, like the SAT challenges students in the areas of analytical reading, writing and mathematics. The test can not be substituted for the actual SAT but it does determine if the student can be a national merit scholar or a national commended scholar depending on how well they did on the test. According to Mrs. Poe in the Student…

Searching for greener grass

DSC_0393

By Jordan Thompson Staff Writer This generation is racing to grow up. Almost any kid in high school, if asked, will easily tell you what it is they are trying to escape from. The top of the food chain has become a crowded place. Going back in time sounds like the perfect solution to students who feel defeated by standardized tests and GPAs. Unfortunately, every generation seems better when it is a part of history, despite its hulking walls that had to be overcome. “Students have become obsessed with their college choice as opposed to if they can actually afford it,” AP teacher Kevin Casey said. Casey attended South Grand Prairie High School, which at…

Useful SAT strategies for Saturday’s test

Many CHS students will be attending local schools this Saturday morning to take the SAT in hopes of scoring big for future plans in college. While some students who go in “blind” for the tests, meaning no prior knowledge or tutoring, the majority, including myself have been planning and studying religiously for the big day. Below I have listed my top 5 strategies for the SAT test: 1. Get a good nights rest and have a healthy breakfast in the morning. This will help fuel your effort while taking the test and ensures that you will not zone out while testing. 2. Be relaxed and confident during your test day. 3. Pace is apparent! Don’t…

ACT scores highlight benefits of alternative exam

By Michelle Pitcher Editor-in-Chief I have been advised, on several occasions, to take the ACT. Many seniors and CHS graduates seem to think that if the SAT is our downfall, the ACT is our saving grace. Based on the recent publication of scores for CISD, they may just be right. Since 2007, the average score for the ACT has risen over six percent in CISD, a dynamic contrast to the static state levels. In addition, 30% more CHS students took the test in 2011 than had in 2010. As word spreads of the widespread success on this exam, more CHS students are looking into this alternative testing option. The main difference between the two tests is…

Putting effort in school gets you more than the grade, Cowlishaw says

By Ben Cowlishaw Online Copy Editor CJ Wilson, first in the Rangers’ starting pitcher rotation, has a career ERA of 3.60. My GPA has fallen nervously close to that number. Most freshmen go into their first year of high school hearing the promise from upperclassmen: “freshman year doesn’t matter”. Most still put forth their full effort, make good grades and get a high ranking. There’s a few, including me, that took those words to heart; it has taken me up until now to realize the ramifications of what I’ve done, and more importantly, what I haven’t. Counselor Chastity Lansdell knows that many students have the impression that their freshman year doesn’t matter, however, it sets…

Countdown to PSAT nearing its end at CHS

Thomas Hair Staff Writer As competition continues to intensify and college admission prices continue to increase, it is becoming all the more important for students to obtain scholarships. The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a prime opportunity to secure such a scholarship, as students with exceptional scores become eligible for an elite National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT is also invaluable practice for the momentous SAT test further down the line. On Wednesday, October 12 all 10th graders and paying 11th graders will take the PSAT. For many juniors here at Coppell High School October 12 will be the culmination of months, or even years, of hard work and preparation. Success on the PSAT could mean great things, as…

New course preps students for SAT

By Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer This year, Coppell High School began offering a one-semester course for juniors to help them prepare for the SAT in the spring. English teacher Matt Bowden is teaching the course, which focuses on vocabulary, essay writing and test-taking skills. Students take several practice tests, aiming to score higher every time. This comes as a better option for many students, who may not have had the time or money to take an SAT-prep course at a private business, which can often run several thousand dollars. “By having the class in my schedule, it doesn’t take any extra time out of my day or weekend,” junior Trevor Berryman said. “By going to…

Beginning the college process

By Seth Slover Staff Writer The college application and preparatory process is a stressful yet extremely important time.  For juniors, this time is on the horizon; for seniors, the time is now. In essence, all students have been preparing for college since beginning public school.  However, it seems as though many students are unsure of what this process consists of. Counselor John Crook sums it all up in a few simple steps. “By the spring of junior year, students should begin the college application and preparation process,” Crook said.  “The SAT and ACT begin taking place during spring of junior year as well,” In other words, students need to begin taking action towards pursuing college.  For…

Top 4 tips for taking the SAT

By Coleman Armes Staff Writer Each year juniors stress out over the SAT. Have no fear though because I am about to give you the top 4 tips for preparing and taking this very important test. 1. Make sure you study before. This can be by taking practice tests, doing daily practice problems, taking a SAT class or anything like this. Just make sure you come into the test knowing what you are going to be dealing with. 2. Get some sleep. Sleep is very important and high school kids don not get enough of it these days. Sleep can make a world of difference and sleeping during the test would not be good at…

Last day to sign up for the PSAT

Corrina Taylor Staff Writer This year for the PSAT the sophomores get to take the test without a charge however the juniors who should have already been preparing in some way are required to pay. Today is the last day to submit the PSAT form and money. The test will take place during school on October 12th. The cost for juniors to take the test is only $27 which isn’t expensive compared to the other expenses juniors will have to face when it comes to colleges. It is a small amount to pay to practice taking a test that will determine which college you will go to. Any practice will help when it comes to…
