Illegal immigration within our borders: pro
Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer America is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world—all because millions have been fortunate enough to embark upon a piece of land with such immense potential it is labeled the “the land of opportunity”. Some might argue this opportunity has been abused, that those who fought to build us up gave us too much freedom. To be frank, too much freedom for non-American citizens. We should not ignore the topic—illegal immigration is a controversial topic heating up in time. A topic that hundreds of years later, has the American youth at the most uneducated state in history. As a Hispanic, I have been asked the dreaded question:…
Patients deserve dignity in death, euthanasia
Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor My great-grandfather was once a brilliant man. He was a sagacious scholar and pastor, a loving husband and father. Unfortunately, I never truly knew this man. For my entire life I have known him only as the perpetually confused man with a hacking cough. Now, at 93 and expected to pass away at any time, my once-proud grandfather’s Alzheimer’s Disease has peaked to where he can no longer perform basic bodily functions on his own. The past dozen years have been miserable for him, but they have also taken a huge toll on my great-grandmother – who has had to care for him single-handedly. I almost get the sense that his…
Professional procrastinators, also known as high schoolers
By Tanner McCord Staff writer The word “procrastination” is a bit of a contradiction. The prefix “Pro” as defined by dictionary.com to be in favor of a plan. However, procrastination is a lack of planning and time management. I am a self-proclaimed professional procrastinator. I am honestly one of the worst, if not the worst, that I know of when it comes to putting off assignments and waiting to the very last minute to begin things that should be very high on my priority list. However if you happen to be on Twitter or Facebook any time around 10:30 p.m. or later, you’re feed will be flooded updates like; “Time to start my English paper”…
Pro: Students friending teachers on facebook
By Mary Witfill Features Editor My four years in high school have taught me that the recipe for success in school is defined, simple and one sided. X is given, the problem has been solved and it is easy to achieve if you can master one skill: communication. Communication with teachers, with students, with administration, you name it – communication is essential. That being said, we can’t get picky about the way communicate. Facebook, the social networking website, has developed into a terrific tool for finding information, developing relationships and contacting various acquaintances. In an age where everything is available at the literal click of a button, it doesn’t make sense for students and teachers…
Not worth it to outsource, Buigas says
Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer Getting a job as a teenager is hard enough. You have little or no experience, employers are always hesitant to hire a first-time worker and, if you do get a job, you are more than likely earning minimum wage. Now imagine what it would be like to be a full grown adult. The recession hits your company hard and you are let go. After years of experience and school preparing you for this successful job, you are left unemployed — no way to support your family. Meanwhile, there are jobs that should be easily available in the United States that are, instead, being sent to foreign countries. Where is the logic…
The Pro Bowl
By Wren Culp Staff Writer The NFL is stupid. Not the football part. That’s what fans like I live for. But the Pro Bowl BEFORE the Super Bowl is just a waste of time and takes away emphasis from the important game. The Pro Bowl is a fun and entertaining football game where players relax and just play a friendly game of football. In history, the Pro Bowl has always been after the super bowl, so players who were in the Super Bowl could play in the game. But this year the NFL screwed up. The NFL scheduled the Pro Bowl for this Sunday, January 31st, 2009. The Super Bowl is not until February 7th.
Con: Should military recruitment be allowed in high school?
We see them almost every day during lunch: big, strong, soldiers in uniforms offering scholarships, a life on the edge and a way for young patriots to serve their country. They set up tables with plenty of information, brochures and lots of smiles for potential new recruits. It is hard to deny high schools across the country are ripe with the qualities the military is looking for: young, smart, athletic, healthy. But is it really right to let America’s youth fall prey to the rewards and glory offered to by the military without being fully aware of the consequences or risks involved? Think about it: as young adults, students are always told their brains are…
