By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing the NFL Playoffs from their sofas once again, but that has not prevented infectious postseason excitement from spreading throughout Coppell. The Wild Card round was full of excitement, highlighted by Tebow’s overtime magic lifting Denver over heavy favorites Pittsburgh. With four matchups pitting the league’s best teams and everything on the line, the second round is sure to have more thrilling performances in store. Below I will give my take on the two NFC Divisional Round games and briefly predict who advances, and who goes home. New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers Despite not being one of the top two teams in the NFC, the New Orleans Saints and their record-breaking offense have…
Cowgirls take on Colleyville Heritage Friday night
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer After rolling through Flower Mound on Tuesday night winning 3-1 the Cowgirls are taking on Colleyville Heritage in the area round of playoffs. Heritage managed to go 10-1 in district, they’re only loss coming to a tough Grapevine team who ended the season as district champions. Coppell had a similar scenario losing only to district champion Southlake Carroll both times the teams met. Despite the similarities the teams have a couple key differences that play in the Cowgirls favor, the first of which being experience. Heritage is a young team with three freshman and no seniors on the team and it shows in their play. They’re a very emotional team…
Cowgirls claw past Flower Mound, advance to Area
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer After an early scare losing the first set 25-22 the Cowgirls went on to sweep the next three to give them the win over Flower Mound and move on to the next round of playoffs. Mistakes were costly in the first set giving up an early lead eventually falling behind by five points after a quick comeback attempt was squashed by Flower Mound blockers. Coppell picked up their game in set two coming from behind to win 25-22. The Cowgirls really went off in the third and fourth sets keeping offensive and defensive miscues to a minimum and built sizable leads that the Jaguars couldn’t recover from. Blocking from freshman…
Chargers could shock Cowboys in season finale
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer After rolling through district last year, this season has obviously been a little more difficult. In addition to losing starting QB Jake Larson and changing up their offense mid-season, those teams we shutout last year are looking to fight back. Keller Central has been the biggest out of these surprises sitting at a 6-2 record after having dismal performances in the past. The team has used experience to their advantage and showed they can compete with the biggest challenges this district offers. After opening in 2004 the best record the Chargers have only managed a high of a 5-5 record. This year they have steadily improved and have almost pulled…
Return of the ‘Claw and Antlers’
By Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer During last year’s historic postseason run for the Texas Rangers, many students could be seen supporting the team with jerseys, shirts and other fan gear. As the Rangers head into game three of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Tampa Bay Rays, students are once again anticipating an exciting October. Game one of the series, a 9-0 blow-out for the Rays, was disheartening for some students. Junior Madison Coleman was at the game, and quickly became concerned for the playoff future of the Rangers. “It was almost upsetting to see them lose so badly. Seeing CJ [Wilson] give up so many runs really crushed my hopes of having…
Cowboys look to obtain series lead following rescheduling
By Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor Coming off a series sweep of Flower Mound last weekend, the Coppell Cowboys baseball team begins their second round series tonight against L.D. Bell with hopes of opening a 1-0 series lead. The series was slated to begin last night in Coppell, but rain from the previous night left the field too wet to play on. The Cowboys will instead host game two at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and game three (if necessary) thirty minutes after the second game ends. The Cowboys will look to replicate their first round success in this series, as they won by scores of 9-2 and 12-0 in their two games against Flower Mound. The…
Lacrosse Playoffs
By: Chris Cummins Staff Writer The Coppell Lacrosse team, a two-time Texas State Lacrosse Division II champion, is going to the state championship. The team is set to play St. Mark’s School of Texas on Saturday in a semifinal matchup is sure to be as heated and competitive as was their previous matchup, in which Coppell only came out on top in overtime. The winner will play either Episcopal School of Dallas or Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, the other two schools still left in the tournament. What makes this tournament different from others the lacrosse team has won is the fact that it’s a Division I tournament. This means the biggest and best…
Cowboys look to win series tonight in Flower Mound
By Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor Coming off an impressive 9-2 win on Thursday night in the opening game of the series, the Coppell Cowboys will look to win their first round playoff series tonight with a victory over Flower Mound. The Cowboys, who were able to take advantage of home field advantage in the series opener, will travel to Flower Mound tonight for the second game of the series. A victory would clinch the best of three series for Coppell, making it a must win game for Flower Mound. Coppell sends perhaps their most consistent pitcher of the year to the mound tonight in junior Conner Foltyn. The lefthander went 7-0 during the regular season…
Cowgirls suffer playoff loss to Grapevine in shootout
By Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor Just three days after the Coppell Cowboys soccer team was eliminated from the postseason, the Cowgirls suffered the same fate, falling to Grapevine in an overtime shootout to end their hopes for a state title. The Cowgirls, who beat Plano West 1-0 on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs, were considered a legitimate contender for the state title before the second round loss. Coppell won District 7-5A this season, going 12-1-1 against divisional opponents in 2011. Grapevine scored the first goal of the game and entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. The Cowgirls responded minutes into the second half, however, as junior Lindsey Meyer scored the equalizing goal for…
Boys soccer playoffs end abruptly
By Chase Porter Staff Writer This past Tuesday the guys soccer team here at CHS ended their season in the first round of the playoffs and its because of an unlikely reason. Over the past season the guys soccer team has competed fairly well with a winning season but a loss to Hebron in the first round. This can be mostly contributed, in my opinion, to the recent loss of a lot of starting senior and junior players. Before this playoff game most of the these players quit because of reasons within the team. The team played well even though they had lost these players but unfortunately some of the players that quit were severely…
