The Woman in Black to be released to the public tomorrow
By Annie Wen Staff Writer On Tuesday of this week I was able to do something really cool: I got to go to an early preview of the new Daniel Radcliffe movie The Woman in Black (Thanks Wren!). The movie will be released to the public tomorrow, Friday February 3. In the film, Daniel Radcliffe plays the role of Arthur Kipps, a struggling lawyer with a young son to raise. He is offered one last chance to prove himself to his law firm and he is sent to settle the legal affairs of a woman who just recently passed away, Alice Drablow. He goes to her house to sort through all her paper work and…
Scream 4 offers revamped killer, recycled thrills
Erin Blatney Staff Writer The Ghostface killer is back with a vengeance in Wes Craven’s newest installment to the Scream franchise, Scream 4. With tons of edge-of-your-seat scenes and blood galore, it is the perfect slasher film for today’s generation. Craven, the man behind the three other Scream movies, takes Scream 4 back to where it all started: the small town of Woodsboro, 10 years after the original killer began his spree. Main character Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, returns to her hometown on a book tour and her presence sets off a string of murders around the town by the notorious Ghostface. No time is wasted when it comes to gore, and barely…
Sucker Punch fails to produce a knockout
By Wren Culp Staff Writer Reality is a prison and only your mind can set you free. Everything your mind creates to escape reality, you control. But the question remains, can Sucker Punch control its own world? Sucker Punch follows the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning), a girl locked away in an insane asylum after being framed by her stepfather for the death of her younger sister. In the insane asylum, she meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung), all girls seeking the same thing: freedom. While in the asylum, the girls are instructed to dance as a way to let go of the harsh realities…
Depp tangos with Rango
By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Webmaster What do you get when you cross an emotionally confused pet lizard, the vast Mojave desert, slick animation and a adrenaline pumping score from Hans Zimmer? You get Rango. Rango is the story of a small lizard (Johnny Depp) who is trying to fit in with his surroundings, both literally and figuratively. A wanna-be actor, Rango is always playing with beat up props, trying to find out where he fits in. One day Rango accidentally gets tossed out of the back of his owners car right in the middle of the Mojave desert and is left to fend for himself. After battling a harsh climate and hungry hawks, he winds…
I Am Number Four proves to be highly entertaining
Thomas Hair Staff Writer February isn’t exactly known for high-profile blockbusters and is occasionally viewed as a dumping ground for sub-par movies. Because of this, my expectations weren’t too high for the latest film from director D.J. Caruso, who is known for films such as Eagle Eye and Disturbia. Entitled I Am Number Four, Caruso’s latest work is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Pittacus Lore. I have a rough history with film adaptations of books, and although I have not read the book version of I Am Number Four, this factor only added to my suspicion that the film would be a dud. However, I Am Number Four turned out…
Tron: Legacy review
Staff Writer It should be noted that the author viewed the film in 2D as opposed to 3D or the Imax versions of the film. “The Grid: a digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I’d never see. And then one day… I got in.” So begins Tron: Legacy, Disney’s sequel of the 1982 classic Tron. Picking up some 20 years after the original, the film stars Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn, the original movies protagonists son. Hoping to find his long lost father, Kevin Flynn (reprised by Jeff Bridges), at the…
Dawn Treader sails to theaters worldwide
Thomas Hair Staff Writer “Return to magic. Return to hope. Return to Narnia.” This is the slogan plastered on every trailer and poster for the new Chronicles of Narnia movie, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Although it is by no means a groundbreaking film and has its share of mistakes, it does what it is intended to do: enchant viewers with a land of magic and untold wonders. Dawn Treader, directed by Michael Apted, was released on Friday to theaters worldwide. It is the third installment in the film adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of fantasy novels by C.S. Lewis. Fans of the book and film series alike flocked to see…
Upcoming Narnia movie opens Friday, deviates from book
Zeb White Staff Writer, Assistant Business Manager This Friday, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will hit theaters across America and England with much riding on this third installment of the Narnia series. The first Narnia movie, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, was a big hit with global ticked sales of $745 million. However, the second film entitled Prince Caspian only made $420 million; despite high hopes and aggressive marketing campaigns. If The Voyage of the Dawn Treader succeeds at the box office, there appears to be hope for the continuation of this seven-part series, though changes to the storyline make analysts wonder whether this can happen. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader…
Don’t Look Up, But Look Forward To The Movie Skyline
Corrina Taylor Staff Writer Throughout the course of movie history aliens have been a key part time and time again. In the movie Skyline the people of the world have been invaded by aliens. As cliche as the alien attack seems the movie had a special way of introducing the invasion. The movie started off focusing on a group of friends in Los Angeles with the female main character, Scottie Thompson, being pregnant during the time of the invasion. Which although seems insignificant is actually an important component of the story in a whole. Then the aliens start to invade the city of Los Angeles hypnotizing the characters of the story, with the blindingly blue…
AMC Grapevine renovation means competition for local dine-in dominator
Rebecca Neumann Entertainment Editor Look out, Studio Movie Grill: AMC Grapevine 30 is renovating 13 of its theaters and converting them into dine-in cinemas, which will likely compete with the long-time dine-in-theater dominator. Walking into AMC Grapevine right now, you only see a huge black wall where a hallway and bathrooms used to be. But pretty soon, it will open up, and in its place will be a bar and 13 newly renovated theaters. These theaters are different from normal because they are one of only four AMC theaters in the U.S. that will feature dining and eating areas. “The concept is pretty much the same as Studio Movie Grill, and we do hope to…
