Military regulation not democratic

By Mike Pankonien Staff Writer In a recent poll commissioned by The Family Research Council, a majority of American’s were found to be against letting congress set military policy (in particular “Don’t ask, don’t tell”) and would prefer the military itself decide its own affairs. Out of 2000 participants, only 23 percent believed congress should have the authority over the military to repeal “Don’t ask, don’t tell” compared to 59 percent who believe the power should lie with the military; this is a grave mistake. We see them almost every day during lunch: big, strong, soldiers in uniforms offering scholarships, a life on the edge and a way for young patriots to serve their country. They set up tables with plenty of information, brochures and lots of smiles for potential new recruits. It is hard to deny high schools across the country are ripe with the qualities the military is looking for: young, smart, athletic, healthy. In Coppell, however, there are heroes showing their courage in deeds rather than idealistic perceptions. These heroes, ranging from young to old, brother to father, staff sergeant to lieutenant, are Coppell High School alumni or relatives of current students. Ashton Daily is a 2004 CHS graduate with the world at his feet. Already in his second term of service, Daily is a lieutenant and platoon leader at only 25.
