Tennis team sets sights on spring season
By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor Though their demaning fall season ended months ago, the Coppell Tennis Team has continued practicing hard every day. Why? Unlike most sports programs at Coppell, tennis has two seasons, one in the fall and one in the spring. In the 2011 fall season, the Coppell tennis team had one of its most successful years of late, including domianting performances in district and a trip to Abilene for the State Playoffs. While the fall season is oriented more towards team success, the spring season focuses on individual achievements. Months have passed since the Cowboys’ exit from the state playoffs in late October, and these months of preparation will come to…
Larson looks to return during senior season
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer Every Friday night in Texas there’s at least one new story about a high school football player sidelined due to injury, but it never really hits home until it happens in your own town. When Jake Larson got injured in a Thursday night game against Denton Guyer stretching for a first down everyone considered his season over. One month later Larson is back in pads and anticipates playing by season’s end. Ultimately, it’s the coaches’ decision as to whether he plays or not. “Jake just isn’t the kid to want to stand there in jeans and crutches on the sidelines,” Head Coach Joe Mcbride said, “He wants to be out…
Playoff scenarios heat up in 7-5A
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer With the season coming to a close the playoff situation in district 7-5A is heating up, especially for the Coppell Cowboys. Southlake Carroll is the only team to officially clinch their spot, but Denton Guyer is sure to follow suit assuming they can beat Keller Fossil Ridge Friday night. Saginaw has already been eliminated from the playoffs and Coppell is facing elimination as well if they lose Friday night to Keller. Should Coppell win they will also need Fossil Ridge to lose once as well as win the last game of the season against a tough Keller Central team. Fossil Ridge still has a possibility of getting in if they…
Cowgirls quietly defeat Keller in three games
By Seth Slover Staff Writer The Cowgirl volleyball team hosted the Keller Indians on Tuesday night just after 6:30. The Cowgirls, from the start, were ready to play. In a game that was less heavily attended than some previous home games, the home team jumped on the Indians early, maintaining three or four point lead throughout the first game of the match. “One reason we played so smoothly tonight was that we played together from the start. We got on a pretty good role early,” Junior Jordan Jones said. With a lead that was eventually extended to a 22-13 lead, the Cowgirls rolled on to a victory of the first of what would eventually be…
Coppell placed in District 7-5A following realignment
by Blake Seitz Sports Editor In Birdville last November, Coppell’s football team suffered the loss that would end its postseason run. Yesterday, Coppell’s future was determined again in Birdville during a Region-wide realignment meeting, which set Coppell’s district for the next two years. Coppell was placed in District 7-5A for the next two seasons, along with old rival Southlake Carroll, former 4A-school Denton Guyer, Justin Northwest, Saginaw and the three Keller schools (Keller, Keller Central and Fossil Ridge). It would seem this is a lucky break for Coppell, which will be one of the larger schools in its district. Head coach Joe McBride was modest in his assessment of the realignment. “There will be no…
Coppell looks to take down panthers in round two
Nathan Reck Assistant Sports Editor After pulling out a 20 point victory in the opening round of the playoffs against Keller Coppell now faces the Plano East Panthers in a second round matchup that starts at 11 am Saturday morning at the Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium. In the opening round Plano East escaped with a win thanks to a 16 point fourth quarter that sent the game into overtime where a guttsy call to go for two gave the Panthers a one point victory over Irving MacArthur. The game featured two strong running games as both teams had at least 40 rushing attempts and over 200 yards on the ground. The Cowboys also featured a strong…
Coppell advances past Keller
By Andy Tabor The Coppell Cowboys beat the Keller Indians 33-13 to extend their season at least one more week. The Cowboys played a close game against the Indians until the fourth quarter when they scored 16 un-answered points to close out the game. The Cowboys will play Plano East next week at Cowboy stadium again but at 11 am this time. The time change will be an interesting factor considering that it will be the Cowboys earliest game of the year. However tonight, the Cowboys started off slow in the first, scoring zero points and letting Keller believe they were still in the game. In the second quarter, the Cowboys were able to score 14 points before…
