Pie Five gets the high five
Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer What is round, cheesy and ready in five minutes? Call it the Subway of pizzas; Pie Five has revolutionized the pie. In an ambient soothing environment, the smell of pepperoni and sausage engulfs the restaurant while casual music plays overhead. Hidden on the corner MacArthur Boulevard and Irving Lane, this eatery is surrounded by small shops in a miniature plaza in a relaxed location. When you enter Pie Five, your attention is immediately drawn to the metallic walls and casual environment. When I had first looked up the place I expected to come into a nicer location with cushioned tables and waiters (maybe I was envisioning Fireside Pies). If you…
Irving students have a “blast” at Science Night
Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer Ready, Set, Teach! and Public Service Academy students perform “chemical poppers” at Irving Lee Elementary’s Science Night. Photo courtesy of Brenda Brinkman. Think back to when you were in elementary school. Do you remember those special days when a guest would come in to show you something that seemed far more interesting than what your teacher had to say? Do you remember taking the things you made and learned home to impress your parents with? Do you remember those lab days when science class had experiments that could easily make Bill Nye jealous? Not many classes get the same academic experiences as students in Coppell. However, thanks to Ready, Set, Teach!…
HART dedicated to saving lives in Irving
by Ashley Attanucci Web Manager Video by Rumill Batts Did you know that five out of ten dogs and seven out of ten cats that are sent to shelters never find homes and are euthanized? Though there are over 3,500 shelters and hundreds more rescue groups in the U.S. that aim to save animals, 11,000 cats and dogs are euthanized each day due to overcrowding alone. Organizations like HART (the Humane Animal Rescue Team), help reduce this number of destroyed, abandoned animals by combating problems locally. HART is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run entirely by volunteer staff who work around the clock to ensure these animals a happy, healthy future. From handling paper work,…
Behind the Scenes: DFW Dragon Boat Festival
Story by Daphne Chen Video by Jacob Harpel and Kyle Kirby Photo Gallery by Daphne Chen On Sunday, May 16, Irving residents may have heard the sound of beating drums, the smell of fresh pad thai and the cheers of Dallas residents watching dragon boat teams race across Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas. Behind the scenes of the fourth annual DFW Dragon Boat Festival, however, were performers and volunteers who often had been there since early in the morning, making sure the event went smoothly. The event kicked off early in the morning with several musical and cultural performances, such as Emily Lo of Plano Shepton High School, who not only played on the 21-string Chinese…
Frozen yogurt arrives in time for winter season in Irving
By Daphne Chen Today was the grand opening of a new frozen yogurt shop in Las Colinas, a few minutes south of where many CHS students live in Valley Ranch (Irving). The store, dubbed Yogurt Zone, is one of only a few places that serves frozen yogurt near Coppell, and so far is the closest. Other popular frozen yogurt shops are Yogurtland in Carrollton (in the H-Mart shopping plaza) and I Heart Yogurt in University Park, for those who are willing to travel a little farther. Frozen yogurt, or “fro-yo”, has become a popular alternative in recent years to ice cream, which has a higher fat content because it is made using cream, whereas frozen yogurt…
