Coppell Rugby takes the field

By Kristen Shepard Staff Writer It’s that time of year again. Intramural sports are springing into action. This year students will have the chance to play a sport that isn’t nearly as well known, it’s not even from America. This sport is Rugby. Rugby is a variation of football that originated in the United Kingdom. Rugby began in the 19th century, and like football, rugby is a tackle sport played with players called backs playing defense, and with players called forwards specializing in offense. There are many resources about how to play the sport, including short instructional videos to walk you through the game. The Coppell Rugby team is relatively new and is looking for players…

Intramural Ultimate Frisbee begins Thursday

Adam Bremner Staff Writer Unlike most high schools, Coppell sponsors a fine intramural program and next up is the second season of ultimate frisbee. The first season was in fall 2010. The newest 2011 games will be played behind the fieldhouse and start at five p.m., beginning this Thursday, April 14. Last year’s spring league was played at Coppell Middle School West, but this time the high school’s fields have opened up. Frisbee will be going along with 3 0n 3 basketball, which is on Mondays, and will be the fifth season of intramurals thus far. And just like every other sport this year, students have compiled many teams and are pushing to have the most…

Intramural dodge ball begins

Kara Adkins staff writer With intramural dodge ball getting kicked off, the games have begun. Yesterday was the first day of competition being held at New Tech High school and the teams were all ready and well prepared to win. Each team played a total of two games determining where they stand amongst their competitors. Each team came up with a very clever name in order to either humor or intimidate the other teams. Some of these names include The Darkness, The Jelly Beans, and New Tech. Intramurals are always a fun time for Coppell students. It gives them a great opportunity to play some of their favorite games in a less competitive atmosphere then…

Dodgeball is back

Abby Drake Staff writer As spring comes to Coppell High School so does the long awaited season of intramural sports. Tonight, Tuesday March 1, 2011, is the first night for intramural dodge ball. During this time teams from every grade come together and compete for the title of intramural champions. Also the senior boys team Fresh to Death is back and ready for another win this season. The games are very Tuesday night from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. and are a fun way for students to compete against one another and have a good time. If you like goofy sports and have a competitive edge then intramurals may be the perfect activity for you…

Absense of varsity players limits intramural competition

By Peter Sblendorio Video by Matt French and Robert Brancheau Original Video – More videos at TinyPic Since their institution in 2008, intramural sports have typically boasted a healthy of mix of participants who play sports at Coppell and those who do not. This is not the case in the 2010 spring intramural sports of dodgeball and Ultimate Frisbee, however, as varsity baseball and football players at Coppell were unable to participate due to obligations to their sports. Baseball was entrenched in the area playoffs during the last two weeks before being eliminated by South Grand Prairie on May 14, and the CHS football team recently extended its after school practices for spring football. Because…

Ultimate Frisbee intramural proves to be source of comradery, healthy competition

Frances Ruiz Staff Writer It seems that getting into the game is no challenge for the players of Abusment Park, an intramural Ultimate Frisbee team comprised mostly of seniors, as their dedication, commitment and efforts this season enable them to be fierce competitors that are capable of winning, being the best and taking home the No. 1 spot.  With roots dating to nearly three years ago, the Abusment Park team has proven to withstand not only intense competition amongst classmates, but the passage of time as well. The team’s founders, senior and co-captain members Andy Tabor and Blake Van Patten, remain the driving force behind Abusment Park. Not only has the duo led the team…

Intramural dodge ball back at CHS

By Peter Sblendorio Staff Writer While one popular intramural sport, Ultimate Frisbee, came to its conclusion last week, another one made its season debut. The first games of the six on six dodgeball season took place on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the gym at New Tech High in Coppell. Nine teams competed in what is the first week of a three-week season. Playoffs will be held on Dec. 17 for qualifying teams. This is the second year that CHS has offered dodgeball as intramural sport for its students, though last year it was held in the spring. The morning announcements at the high school, as well as constant reminders by the faculty at lunch, urged…

Ultimate Frisbee’s regular season comes to close

by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer The last game of Ultimate Frisbee’s regular season will be tomorrow, Saturday morning at 9 a.m. behind the field house. The top 6 teams will participate in a tournament-style playoff to be held November 7, this Sunday. Ultimate Frisbee, played for 3 Saturdays, is part of Coppell High School’s fairly new intramural program (as opposed to “extramural” -or varsity- sports) which allows students of the high school to participate in various sports with teams organized based on athletic ability, novice or advanced, although teams this year only played in the advanced division. Sign-up for Frisbee, sponsored by Latin teacher Jeremy Varnell, began late September. Check daily announcments or Student Services for additional opportunities to sign up for other sports this…
