Diabetes awareness reaches Coppell

Type I diabetes, sometimes known as juvenile diabetes, usually strikes in childhood. Over 23 million Americans have diabetes, and awareness of this condition is being spread through the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) on the high school level, starting with Coppell. Coppell parent Michele Pitman, President and CEO of intelliVOL, connected JDRF to CHS. IntelliVOL is an online community service management system that connects high school students in search of service activities with non-profit organizations in need of volunteers. HOSA students place at area competition
by Julia Kim Staff Writer On Jan. 15-16, 21 Coppell High School students participated in the HOSA Area V Spring Leadership Conference at Denton Ryan High School against students from 58 schools. Seniors Jeffrey Xue, Drew Hasson, Kevin Garza, Sharon Mathai, Jayla Moore and junior Sydney Kapp will advance to the state competition in April in Houston. Six to advance to state
By Julia Kim Staff Writer During the HOSA Area Competition at Denton Ryan High School on Jan. 15-16, several students were awarded. In April, six competitors will advance to the state competition. Seniors Drew Hasson, Kevin Garza and Sharon Mathai participated as a team and placed third in Creative Problem Solving. Junior Sydney Kapp and senior Jayla Moore were recognized for their scores on the Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Issues exam. In addition, seniors Suwetha Amsavelu, Shaylee Zaugg and Sowmya Kalathuru placed fifth and fourth respectively. Amsavelu and Zaugg competed as a team in Forensic Science and Kalathuru competed in Biotechnology.
CHS’ spare change goes a long way for cancer patients

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program is a campaign to raise money for patients who are fighting blood cancers. HOSA is making change
Health Occupation Students of America, HOSA, is now participating in “Pennies for Patients”, a program that collects spare change for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students are asked to bring spare change to their fourth period class for the project. Classes that collect over $200 will receive a ticket to a Stars game for every student, and the class that collects the most money will have a pasta party, courtesy of Olive Garden. All students are encouraged to participate in this benevolent fundraiser.
“Fan Bring a Can” scheduled for Nov. 6
By Loren Hughes Staff Writer The first annual ”Fan Bring a Can” fundraiser will be introduced to CHS this year. CHS’ UIL district will be uniting with the North Texas Food Bank and Christian Community Action (CCA) in order to collect canned donations on Nov. 6 at the Coppell vs. Flowermound away football game. Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) will be stationed at the visitor’s entrance of the stadium in order to collect the canned donations. Even one donation is able to make a difference, so be sure to bring your cans to the game next Friday! HOSA begins campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
By Julia Kim Staff Writer Following their autism walk earlier in September, HOSA continues to contribute to the community by donating goods to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The HOSA Halloween Party on Wed. Oct. 28 in Ms. Brinkman’s room, A110, is the introduction to HOSA’s next campaign: the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). LLS is dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services; the organization celebrated their 60th anniversary this year and continues to aim at transforming the lives of people with blood cancer. HOSA members are granted one service hour for donating a food or party item. The hours count only for HOSA and contributes to their HOSA membership requirements. An active HOSA member must have a…
