2010’s most amazing moments in sports!

Thomas Hair Staff Writer As I contemplated the past year during the first days of the New Year, it struck me that 2010 was truly a great year. It was filled with fantastic games and performances, and the most prominent were the amazing moments in sports leaving fans speechless. One thing is for sure: it was an exciting year for sports enthusiasts. All of the usual hype surrounding yearly sports events such as the NFL or NBA was converged with rare occurrences such as the Winter Olympics and the World Cup. This made 2010 the ultimate year in sports, stocked full of amazing moments. Although there were definitely thousands of amazing sporting feats that could…

Footballs over; whats next?

Chase Porter Staff Writer Football seasons over but what is the next sport that everyone can enjoy? Well, there is soccer, baseball and hockey but theres one sport that I think is the most enjoyable of them all. Lacrosse; two time state champs are beginning there season at the end of January. The team has been practicing for a few weeks now and they look to be ready for another winning season. The team this year has moved up to division 1 but they arent very scared of their competition. The main competition this year will probably be Saint Marks and Highland Park which are both big time schools for Texas lacrosse. Both the teams…

Coppell Hockey slips into losing streak; playoff hopes fading

By Thomas Hair Staff Writer The Coppell Cowboys Varsity hockey team, under the direction of Head Coach Tim Barr, has had tremendous success in recent years, more so than most other programs at CHS. For example, last season the Cowboys of the ice claimed the City Championship title and went on the place 3rd place in the State Tournament. This season, however, has not quite panned out how the team hoped. Plagued by new season jitters, Coppell began the 2010 season with two disappointing losses-to rivals Southlake Carroll and Plano West. In the Cowboys’ third game, though, they came to life. Coppell improved their record to 1-2 after defeating Flower Mound by a whopping 8-0,…

Coppell Hockey looks to start quickly, improve further in 2010

by Thomas Hair Staff Writer  Every Friday, hundreds of Coppell students support the football team by attending vivacious pep rallies and going to the football games.    Everybody at Coppell High School knows how great the football team is, and other sports at the school such as volleyball have received no shortage of attention. In the midst of all the excitement surrounding football, it was quite easy to miss all of the other great groups that have been starting up their seasons in the past couple of weeks.  One such squad was the Coppell High School Hockey Team. Coppell Hockey’s Varsity team has been very successful in the past few years, including a 3rd place…

NHL playoffs begin with upsets galore

By Andy Tabor The NHL playoffs got off to a rousing start with two favorites, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals falling in their first games.  The Caps and Penguins both lost at home Wednesday and Thursday night, as both teams are now looking at a one game deficit. Other first games included the Buffalo Sabres defeating the Boston Bruins 2-1, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Las Angelas Kings 3-2, the Philidelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1, the Colorado Avalanche beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2, and the upstart Phoenix Cyotes beat the traditional NHL blue blood Detroit Red Wings by the tally of 3-2. These upsets in the early going are…

U.S.A hockey ready to battle Finland

By Andy Tabor The United States hockey team has had a very successful winter Olympics thus far but hope to continue farther in their pursuit of a gold medal when they play Finland 2 pm central.  The Americans look very hot going into this game however the Finland team has many top NHL performers to counter America. Finland has players such as Teemu Selanne and the Koivu brothers whom come from top NHL franchises and are all accustomed to playing with each other.  The Finland team will be a dangerous test for the Americans. America could conceivably come into this game with a cocky “we beat Canada” attitude.  Look for Finland to try and make…

Senior girls look to support sports teams

By Amanda Peck Video by Keely Leonard Staff Writer Having cheerleaders, entertainers and fans is an important part of any sporting event, but having a specific group dedicated to cheering on the teams and providing them with treats after their games is a great benefit. The famous group known as the Sideline Psychos was introduced to Coppell High School last year by Katie Leonard, now a freshman at Texas Tech. Leonard and several of her friends decided to make a group supporting the varsity boys soccer team. They made shirts with the player’s names and numbers on the back of them, went to all the games and gave the players treats after their games. “I…

Coppell takes on Plano West in hockey

By Amanda Peck Staff Writer The Coppell Cowboys varsity hockey team will take on Plano West tonight at the Farmers Branch Dr. Pepper center. Plano West is one of Coppell’s biggest opponents, but the Cowboys are prepared and ready to win. “Plano West is pretty good, but I think we can beat them,” senior capatin Charlie Busch said. “We have been practicing hard and we have beat them in the past.” Plano West has been ranked higher in previous seasons, so the Cowboys are predicted to come out on top at tonight’s game. The game will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Coppell’s home arena, so come out and support your Cowboys!

Coppell vs. Jesuit rivalry continues

By Amanda Peck Staff Writer On Thursday, Oct. 29 the Coppell varsity hockey team will play their biggest rival, the Jesuit Rangers. For both the players and the fans of both sides, this game is by far a favorite.  The background behind the rivalry was brought about because of the fact that both teams have always been pretty good and the result of the game is never predictable. Another reason for the rivalry is that some Jesuit students live in Coppell and used to go to school with students from CHS. The game will take place at Coppell’s home rink, the Farmers Branch Dr. Pepper Stars Center, at 7:15 on Thursday night. So, come out…
