Top 10 Super Bowl Halftime Performances
By John Loop Staff Writer Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl performance in 1993 revolutionized halftime shows at the Super Bowl. Before this, it was much more like a college game halftime with marching bands in many of the previous Super Bowls. After Madonna’s dazzling performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl, I began compiling a list of the game’s all-time great productions. Without further ado, here are the top-10 halftime performances of the “Big Game.” 10. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – Super Bowl XXXVIII, 2004, Reliant Stadium in Houston Who will ever be able to forget the infamous “wardrobe malfunction”? Janet made her presence on stage a powerful one, with her wide array of dancers as well…
Soccer unappreciated, underrepresented in America
By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor Try to go through your daily routines for an entire week, or even a single day, without seeing or hearing anything about sports. Even if you have always been disinterested in sports, it will surprise you how much they are intertwined in everyday American life. It is no secret that Americans as a whole are fascinated by sports, with football obtaining almost religious levels of devotion from some. This enduring fascination has led to the development of a notorious sports culture in America – one more lucrative and diverse than any other in the world. I have been an avid sports fan since infancy. I relish being able to…
NFL Predictions: NFC Divisional Round
By Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing the NFL Playoffs from their sofas once again, but that has not prevented infectious postseason excitement from spreading throughout Coppell. The Wild Card round was full of excitement, highlighted by Tebow’s overtime magic lifting Denver over heavy favorites Pittsburgh. With four matchups pitting the league’s best teams and everything on the line, the second round is sure to have more thrilling performances in store. Below I will give my take on the two NFC Divisional Round games and briefly predict who advances, and who goes home. New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers Despite not being one of the top two teams in the NFC, the New Orleans Saints and their record-breaking offense have…
Coppell football grads experience success at next level
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer Coppell’s recent success in football is no secret and this success has carried over to the college level with seven Division I scholarships being given out in the past five years and one player who has practiced in the NFL. Most Coppell students now remember running backs Cam McDaniel and Evans Okotcha, but before these two there was Emmanuel Moody. Moody is one of the most successful football players to come out of Coppell High School since graduating in 2005. Initially, Moody committed to Texas but eventually was convinced by USC to sign with the Trojans. He enjoyed some success winning the 2006 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year award but…
Weekend state final predictions
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer If you’re free this weekend and you love football you should make your way to Cowboys stadium to catch the 4A and 5A state championships Friday and Saturday night. District rival Southlake Carroll is the lone Dallas representative taking on Fort Bend Hightower. As much as it pains me to do, I have to give the edge to Southlake Carroll. The Dragons just have too good of a quarterback in Kenny Hill and a very solid and experienced receiving core to back him up. For the Division II state championship we have Spring Dekaney taking on Cibolo Steele. Steele has the playoff experience, winning state last year and the team…
DFW well represented in state semifinals
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer Football playoffs are entering their final two weeks and the Dallas area is once again well represented with a chance to play in both the Division I and II state title games. In Division I, two area powerhouses, Southlake Carroll and Dallas Skyline meet at SMU’s Ford stadium in the only battle between unbeaten teams. Both teams are heavy offense and this game should be a shootout. This game will most likely go down to the wire, as both teams are almost identical with a mobile junior quarterback and two star receivers. I give Skyline the edge with a very high scoring offense that has at least 30 points a…
Jordan selected for All-American team
By Mary Whitfill Features Editor Nick Jordan, a 165-pound kicker for the Coppell High School varsity football team, has been selected to play in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American bowl. This elite group of ‘All-American’ players will be playing in a game at the Alamodome in San Antonio on January 7, 2012. Fox Sports on MSN.com reported that John Meyers, Director of Strategic Communications, Marketing and Outreach, U.S. Army Accessions Command, said the following: “Nick is a talented athlete whose leadership and teamwork qualities have made him a standout at Coppell High School. Only the strongest wear the Army colors, and Nick possesses similar mental, emotional and physical strengths to Army Strong Soldiers. We are…
Two sport athletes common theme in Coppell athletics
By Chris Reagan Staff Writer Many of the top athletes at Coppell have been committed to multiple sports. In most recent memory that would be Tyler Landis, Nate Hruby, and Brandon Mullins who all excelled at not only football but also lacrosse. The two-sport athlete is not something new to Coppell. Many athletes choose to participate in sports to not only fill up some time between season but also to help them train for their favorite sport. “My love is football,” sophomore Killian Bresnahan said. “Wrestling gets me stronger and builds stamina and track keeps me in shape and fast for football.” Bresnahan is a rare type of athlete involved and excelling in not only…
A true holiday to be thankful for
By Jay Carroll Staff Writer It is the holiday season, which means Christmas is just around the corner. Oh wait, we still have Thanksgiving. It seems like every year we start to see ornaments, trees and other Christmas items already on display in stores when it is only the beginning of November. I saw a house with Christmas lights already up, and City Hall was putting up its lights when? I do not want to sound like Scrooge; I love the holidays, but it has gotten a little out of hand. People only truly pay attention and love holidays when they receive gifts, whether it is candy or presents. But what is wrong with a…
Cowboys lose playoff berth, end season 28-7
By John Loop Staff Writer Amidst the celebration by Keller Central, the Coppell Cowboys reflected on a tough loss against the Chargers, and taken out of playoff contention by the score of 28-7. Sophomore Connor Wilson got his third start in the stadium where the Cowboys have never, and still haven’t, won a game since 2001. Wilson completed 7 passes for 99 yards, and also rushed for 44 yards and one touchdown. Both the Cowboys and the Chargers traded 3-and-outs on each of their first few offensive possessions. Wilson and the Cowboy offense would draw first blood, as the sophomore would punch the ball into the end zone from one yard out to take an…
