Burger chains attract attention of CHS

By Kristen Shepard Staff Writer Its hard to ignore the craze surrounding the new burger developments springing up around town. Specifically, What-A-Burger and In-N-Out have caught the attention of people all around Coppell. Whether you want a quick meal after a study session, or a social place to spend time before a game, these local restaurants are the perfect pick. Last year, as construction concluded on the What-A-Burger near Market Street, excitement built for the grand opening. On April 20th, the craze began. Less than two miles away from the school, What-A-Burger is located close enough to be a prime spot for students enjoying Reniassance lunch. Other than hamburgers, this chain offers other delicious options, including…

Students taste budget crunch in cafeteria line

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer The United States has felt the impact of the Recession, whether it is through rising prices in gas or ketchup. Educational funding in result has suffered severely across America. Like school districts across the state, Coppell Independent School District finds itself facing budget issues, fighting to manage educational funds and restrain the effects of money cuts on teachers and students. During a budget press conference in Austin on April 6, Texas school districts were held out to speak to legislators responsible for making public education funding recommendations and proceeded to emphasize that budget cuts were unwanted, but necessary. CISD officials returned with a plan to cut back on several items…

Obesity starts in schools

Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer Growing up with Cuban grandparents and other family not accustomed to the American life style, not a day passes when I am not lectured about how America, as a whole, is so overweight. Every time we go out to dinner or drive through the nearest fast food place, my sister and I get a soapbox about how children are creating this obese generation because of the type of food we eat, how fast we were eating it and the size of the meals – which is saying a lot, because Cuban meals are never exactly small. Then last year, while I was in the school store, one of the girls behind…

Tea -a current favorite beverage

Ashley Attanucci Web Manager This weekend I made one of the best investments of the year- on Teavana’s most popular tea flavor: Samurai Chai Mate, a combination of two seperate Chai blends. I had been eyeing this tea since last Christmas, I remember, when I tasted a sample as I hurried out of the mall, debating whether I should make the investment or not. For ten dollars or more per ounce of loose leaf tea, I figured that I should really love it before I buy it. When I visited the Galleria of Dallas again this Saturday, after having let the idea of the Samarai Chai marinate with each tea craving over the past year,…

The Mc-Licious return of the McRib

Ashleigh Heaton Editor-in-Chief Yup, McDonalds has brought back the infamous McRib sandwich – and we wonder why half the country is obese. The sandwich, which consists of a rib slathered in barbecue sauce, pickles and onions, will be back on the McDonalds for a limited time of six weeks. It has become somewhat of a cult favorite among fast food enthusiasts, and it is a big deal that the meal is coming to all Mickey-D’s locations rather than select restaurants (like most of its past runs were.) But before you take a bite, keep in mind that one sandwich has 26 grams of fat, 500 calories and 70 milligrams of cholesterol. Just saying. Have you…

Everything is bigger in Texas

Laura Kattilakoski Staff Writer Year after year, thousands of Texans squeeze in through the gates of the Texas State Fair in Dallas to experience a variety of fried foods, thrilling rides and state livestock. The first sign Fair Park is nearby is the prominent Ferris wheel, which can be seen from miles away. Crowds line the streets, trying to make their way to the ticket booths. Immediately upon stepping inside the gates, you are hit by the smell of dozens of foods cooking in hot, greasy oil. Rides whirl on all sides. Children drag oversize stuffed animals from the carnival games they won. This is a typical day at the Texas State Fair. The annual…

A 9-inch burger? What?

What’s 2,530 calories, 144 grams of fat, and includes six hamburger patties, pepperoni, mozzarella and something called Tuscan sauce on an enormous sesame-seed bun? It’s Burger King’s new Pizza Burger. At first sight, it seems like something out of a horror movie, a grotesque mush they call food. This is something I like to call a ‘food sin’. The Pizza Burger is almost impossible to think about digesting; it seems to be a trend in American culinary, making everything bigger and better. Thank goodness this only is available at the New York City Whopper Bar, at least for now.I can’t even put my mind around this gigantic food creation that sells for nine dollars a…

Lunch room food: The Otis Spunkmeyer

by Chase Porter Staff Writer Video by Davis Deloach and Josh Oden In the lunch room there are many types of food to pick from, from pizza to the mystery foods of the international line, but one delectable in the cafeteria has become the most popular: the Otis Spunkmeyer cookie.                 The cookies have been around for about five years now and the students here at CHS can’t get enough of them. Many students have one or more cookies during the lunch period, and for the unfortunate few in C lunch, there are rarely enough cookies left for the last lunch of the day.              The extremely dedicated lunch ladies that make these cookies say that…
