Pie Five gets the high five

PieFive2web

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer What is round, cheesy and ready in five minutes? Call it the Subway of pizzas; Pie Five has revolutionized the pie. In an ambient soothing environment, the smell of pepperoni and sausage engulfs the restaurant while casual music plays overhead. Hidden on the corner MacArthur Boulevard and Irving Lane, this eatery is surrounded by small shops in a miniature plaza in a relaxed location. When you enter Pie Five, your attention is immediately drawn to the metallic walls and casual environment. When I had first looked up the place I expected to come into a nicer location with cushioned tables and waiters (maybe I was envisioning Fireside Pies). If you…

Food pantry hungry for donations

By Tanner McCord Staff Writer Hunger is a huge problem faced by several thousand kids every day and unfortunately, you don’t have to look very far to see its presence. Coppell ISD is currently at its highest rate of homelessness, on top of that, kids even here in Coppell are hungry. Not “Lets go get a pop-tart from the store hungry,” these students are “Where is my next meal coming in from” hungry. Luckily for these students, Coppell health science teacher Ray Pool is taking action and has his own food closet located in his room, A110. Pool knows quite a bit about what it takes to live a healthy life, but you don’t need…

CHS vending machines save lives

Lunch time is not lunch time for all of us. For my fellow procrastinators, or as I like to refer to as ‘crafty planners,’ lunch is considered an extra thirty minutes to do homework that was boycotted the night before. So in that thirty minutes I am always rushing. Despite what I convince myself, I am horrible with timing things correctly. it is safe to say I never have time to grab lunch on my way to 5th period like I think I will. Thankfully, this school happens to be equipped with a few decent vending machines. If you can’t find anything moderately nutritious in the two candy bar dispensors, you will always manage to find something tasty but not too guilt-worthy in the other three….

Less than two miles away from the school, What-A-Burger is located close enough to be a prime spot for students enjoying Reniassance lunch. Other than hamburgers, this chain offers other delicious options, including…

Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer For the first time in the entire history of the establishment, In-N-Out Burger has been opened in North Texas. The California based company has found great reactions and turnouts for the new openings: People were camped out the night before opening night and the drive-thru line extended for over two miles. With the nearest In-N-Out in Arizona, Coppell citizens have been enjoying the new addition to their fast food desires. Plans to open more franchises in Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving and Garland are underway, exciting many Coppellians.

Students taste budget crunch in cafeteria line

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer The United States has felt the impact of the Recession, whether it is through rising prices in gas or ketchup. Educational funding in result has suffered severely across America. Like school districts across the state, Coppell Independent School District finds itself facing budget issues, fighting to manage educational funds and restrain the effects of money cuts on teachers and students. During a budget press conference in Austin on April 6, Texas school districts were held out to speak to legislators responsible for making public education funding recommendations and proceeded to emphasize that budget cuts were unwanted, but necessary. CISD officials returned with a plan to cut back on several items…

Obesity starts in schools

Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer Growing up with Cuban grandparents and other family not accustomed to the American life style, not a day passes when I am not lectured about how America, as a whole, is so overweight. Every time we go out to dinner or drive through the nearest fast food place, my sister and I get a soapbox about how children are creating this obese generation because of the type of food we eat, how fast we were eating it and the size of the meals – which is saying a lot, because Cuban meals are never exactly small. Then last year, while I was in the school store, one of the girls behind…
