Fashion made for the unfashionable

By Ellen Cameron Staff Writer During her last class period at CHS In the sixth grade, I made a joking remark that one day I would rule the world. Except sixth graders apparently don’t understand jokes—or, worse, my jokes—so I was labeled as the girl who wanted to take over the world. That epithet stuck. So, six years later, I’m still known as the girl who wants to take over the world. Just to set the record straight, I don’t. However, if I did, I would make some major fashion changes that probably wouldn’t look very good (not that fashion of the ‘80s looked notoriously great anyway) and call it fashion for the unfashionable. Or…

Hello again Nike shorts

During a cold winter where we saw temperatures that fell into the teens, jeans and warm pants were the dominant clothing item students were other than thick coats. Now, with temperatures in the blazing 80s, shorts have come back into the common dress with the always popular Nike shorts being seen the most. When school first started and even at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, everywhere were girls with the Nike shorts. I even bought a pair to see what all the hype was about and found them to be extremely comfortable. Back when they first came onto the scene, it was usually just a black and white pair and the occasional pink, black…

Tan for pale, skinny for big: beauty changes with time Image and video hosting by TinyPic

By Ellen Cameron Staff Writer The horrible updos, the ridiculous shoulder pads, the garish colors: fashion disasters of the ‘80s. It’s hard to believe that such looks used to be considered cool, and even beautiful, but they were… for some reason.  Maybe everyone was colorblind? Although then it could be argued that we will later regret our current fashion choices as fits of cultural insanity. Regardless, it’s obvious that the fashion has evolved over the years, but fashion is far from isolated: fashion stems from interesting cultural phenomenon that can be directly linked. Skin tone Back in the day (as in, really back—centuries back), beginning in predominantly England (who we share the most culture with),…

What not to wear during these cold, rainy days

With all the rain the last two days, students are bundling up to keep warm and dry. There are some that maybe aren’t making the best clothing decision when it comes to dressing for the weather. The temperature started out this morning at around 40 degrees. Though yesterday it was a little bit warmer, it’s still surprising to see students wearing shorts. Today especially, with the slowing dropping temperature, you’d think that you’d see most everyone wearing pants. I was shocked to find a few students walking in the halls with shorts on. Shorts should be reserved for warm weather with the coldest temperature for them being the high or middle 70′s. Those wearing them…

2009, 2010 Winter Fashions

By Mary Whitfill Staff Writer The country is pulling itself out of a depression and the fashion world is rocking as this season’s shows predict what 2010 fashions will look like. Over the knee / knee high boots are showing up everywhere this season. The boots can be dressed up or down, and are available in towns all over America in general stores such as Dillard’s, JC Penny, and Macys. Leather clothing will be seen on the streets of cities such as Washington DC and New York City as they bundle up for the cold in outfits that are warm and fashionable. In the office, leather skirts are making it big with tights and flats,…

Fashion blog proves to be in style

I am always looking for the most recent trends. Along with looking at magazines and watching TV for style ideas, the blogging world has become a great source of fashion tips for everyone. I have recently started following French fashionista ,Betty, who blogs about the clothes and accessories she loves. With the help of a photographer, she posts pictures of herself in her outfits. The blog is called Le Blog De Betty and you can check it out here!  If you look through all of her pictures you will quickly realize that she only sports expensive designer duds. I am not saying to use this blog to base all of your fashion purchases off of,…

Shop More On Polyvore

By: Maddie Walters Staff Writer Every month I receive a fresh copy of the newest edition of Vogue magazine. Upon snatching it from my mailbox, I immediately run inside, jump onto my bed, turn on my bedside light and settle in for a fashion experience. I’ll be honest, I don’t read it for the articles. The thrill of  immense inspiration that I get from the creative shoots and most importantly the outfits that Vogue is able to create is probably bordering on silly, but I don’t care. There are few things in this world that inspire me like Vogue magazine, and recently, I found the best way to express the creative rush that comes from reading…
