Facebook’s new update fails to impress

Tanner McCord Staff Writer As many of my Facebook friends and I’m sure other students have noticed, Facebook has come out with another unnecessary and unwanted update to the home page. If you have been away from Facebook for a few days, when you log on there will be a quite distracting box right above the new-ish chat update that is buzzing and updating like a dadgum twitter feed. Although the update is liked by some, it is evident through reading the constantly updating side box that so and so posted a status about it and what’s her face has liked it already and average Joe has commented on it saying that he doesn’t like…

Battle of the Bands to benefit Japan disaster relief

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer The Japanese tsunami, earthquake is one of the biggest disasters in history since World War II. In efforts to help one of our nation’s greatest neighbors, thousands of Americans have come together to devise all sorts of charity events and fundraisers to help raise money in hopes to help restore one of the world’s most precious countries. At Coppell High School we have many generous clubs which are always looking for opportunities in which they can give back. The Red Cross club is amongst those. Along with the help of Red Cross clubs all around the Dallas area, CHS will join together to sponsor a Battle of the Bands event at the Eisemann Center…

Our virtually reality

Erica Rohde Staff Writer “You don’t actually believe that we’ve become slaves to technology yet, do you?” I was curious at what the substitute teacher was asking and I felt a little misunderstood. There was no way that I was contradicting what I had spent my entire life believing in. “We already are.” The sub had walked in with typed out lessons and handouts on technology of the 21st century and how, one day, we will have robots simulating people and you won’t be able to differentiate between the two. As I sat in class, I disagreed with his opinion and almost every point he made. It was more than just a disagreement. His accusations…

Social Networking-Pro

by Shelby Jurca Staff Writer You need a friend’s help on homework—you get on Facebook. You need to know what time to be somewhere—you get on Facebook. You hear a dating rumor—you get on Facebook. You’re bored—you get on Facebook. It is more than just a social networking site; it is the source of life’s information. If Facebook or other similar sites didn’t exist, the way users obtain and share information would not be the same. If you think I’m being a little melodramatic, that’s a bit of a hypocritical way to look at it. Think about it. Social networking is another step in society’s progress. It may be Facebook now, but our society is…

CHS students face the harsh online realities that plague high schools across the nation

by Divya Kumar News Editor Are you Facebook friends with Lauren Taylor? Think back to how you know her. Did you meet her at a football game? Or maybe she was in one of your classes at school? She is a sophomore at CHS and the two of you have mutual friends online, so there’s obviously no harm in adding her. There’s always the chance that you’ll end up meeting her, and adding her on Facebook is the first step towards that, right? Wrong. You’ll never meet Lauren Taylor because she isn’t real. She’s listed under the Coppell High School network, “likes” Taylor Swift and The Notebook and has a friendly information box; this is…

Next step in the Facebook empire released

Mary Whitfill Features Editor Beyond the media attention Facebook was already receiving, the recent release and award show domination of The Social Network has only increased awareness of the world’s largest social networking site. With all eyes on the next move, the world has been waiting to see what Facebook changes will be rolled out next. According to Cnet News, the site will be launching a third party commenting system in a matter of weeks. The new commenting product will be an extension of the already available system, which allows users to link multiple Facebook pages.  Currently, Facebook users are able to use their profiles to alert others of their activity on outside sites. The…

New British boy band sensation leaks into the U.S.

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer With five talented individuals: Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes, The Wanted was an off-the-bat hit in 2009 through a mass audition by Jayne Collins (founder of The Saturdays). Their debut single “All Time Low” was produced by Steve Mac and co written by Ed Drewett upon its release in the summer of 2010 it debuted as number one on the UK Singles Chart– it remained on the UK Top 40 for 11 weeks straight. The New Deal

Chris Cummins Staff Writer 1/5/2011 Goldman Sachs, the veritable investment bank that saw its reputation tarnished in the financial panic of 2008, has reportedly informed some of it’s wealthy, private investors of an opportunity to invest in Facebook, the mammoth social networking site. The deal, which values Facebook at around $56 billion dollars, is drawing the ire of investors and regulators, mainly because it circumvents the rules regarding privately held companies. One of the most sacrosanct rules governing privately held companies is the cap on the number of investors at 500, after which any stock issued to new stockholders automatically makes the previously private company now public. The reason the deal is regarded as unethical…

Facebook faces criticism over free speech

Kelly Stewart Staff Writer According to The New York Times, Facebook has now decided to crack down on illegal posts to its website, or posts that violate its terms of service, with its “hate and harassment team”. So far, Facebook has removed many posts, including a page organized by WikiLeaks supporters that was used to coordinate attacks on company sites. However, the company has faced criticism for being too slow to react, or not reacting at all to some types of abusive pages, including the decision not to remove pages that were critical of religion or posts bashing a girl that appeared in a music video, because appearing in that video made her a “public…

Facebook creator claims legendary title

Michelle Pitcher Opinions Editor TIME Magazine’s 2010 Person of the Year did not end a war, find a cure, or solve the economic crisis– he created a website. Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg found himself in good company when he took on the “Man of the Year” title, past recipients including former presidents Frank Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, as well as historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Bill Gates. Although his achievements seemed minimal at first, in the past seven years he has worked to accommodate his site to suit users from across the globe. Worldwide, one out of every twelve people has a Facebook account,…
