Second earthquake hits Japan

By Kelly Stewart Opinions Editor Japan has not seen the last of the earthquakes; a second quake has struck just south of the island just hours after the New Year was proclaimed according to CNN. Thankfully, no tsunami warnings have been issued for this 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit about 302 miles from the southern end of Japan and no damage has been reported. Japan is part of an area at high risk for seismic activity, called the ‘ring of fire’, so named for the ring of volcanoes that encircle it. East Coast shocked by earthquake, bracing for Irene

Ben Cowlishaw Staff Writer In Texas, we are accustomed to wild swings in our weather and unusual phenomenon seems to be the norm. This week, the East Coast was shocked by a rare earthquake and is now bracing for the wrath of Hurricane Irene. On Tuesday, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Virginia, but the affects were felt as far away as Canada, Chicago and Atlanta. While no major damage or fatalities were reported, many precautions were observed along the Eastern Seaboard and points west. Battle of the Bands to benefit Japan disaster relief

In efforts to help one of our nation’s greatest neighbors, thousands of Americans have come together to devise all sorts of charity events and fundraisers to help raise money in hopes to help restore one of the world’s most precious countries. Cranes help aid Japan relief

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer Last Friday, Wilson Elementary students came together with their cranes to help aid Japan along with The Bezos Family Foundation . For each crane that was donated, The Bezos Family Foundation donated $2 to Architecture for Humanity’s reconstruction efforts in Japan. This all started with 3rd Grade students wanted to help out Japan in some way after hearing about the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami; many students and staff members at wilson elementry have become friends with former Wilson students who now live in Japan. Clubs unite to raise money for Japan

Ashley Attanucci Web Manager Today after school, National Art Honor Society (NAHS) and National Honor Society (NHS) are uniting under one cause and folding as many origami cranes as possible. Any students, friends and teachers are invited to join this effort in the large commons today from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. The Bezos Family Foundations has agreed to donate $2 per paper crane (up to $200,000) to the reconstruction efforts in Japan from the devastating earthquake, helping to rebuild through the Architecture for Humanity organization. Poets on Shirts gives voice to victims of Chile earthquake

Ashleigh Heaton Entertainment Editor Last week on Feb. 27, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit central Chile, devastating the lives of its citizens through its sheer destruction. Aid has been flowing in to help the Chile citizens, and the Junior World Affairs Council (JWAC) of Coppell High School has pledged to do their part through a T-shirt campaign called Poets on Shirts. Each of the three T-shirt options features quotes from famous pieces of poetry, from Emily Dickinson to Dylan Thomas and Maya Angelou. Those who wish to buy can buy either one shirt for $15 or all three for $30. All proceeds will be given to the American Red Cross to help the relief effort…
