Thespian troupes make an effort to ‘can’ hunger with TOTS-EAT

Addy Buigas-Lopez Staff Writer Hunger is a very scary thing; that’s why over 280 Thespian troupes across the nation collect pounds of non-perishable food items for donations to the 49.1 million people in the United States living in food insecure households. Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat (TOTS-EAT) is the International Thespian Society’s annual nationwide community service project to collect food for local charities. Thespian troupes host a month-long food drive during the month of October to collect cans that are then donated to the food bank of their choice. “Our goal for this year, as a nation, is to get around 350,000 pounds to beat our record-breaking total of 332,000 pounds last year,”…

Food, music and a benefit at theatre department silent auction and revue

Ashleigh Heaton Editor-in-Chief  Video by: Chloe Lanier, KCY Broadcast (video coming soon)  You look up at the stage, enamored by the high school performer singing and dancing to a Broadway     tune.  Content, you take a bit of your dinner before getting up and checking to see if you have the winning bid for a signed Troy Aikman jersey.  Such is how the evening will feel on Monday during the drama department’s first annual silent auction and dinner revue, benefitting the Coppell High School theater department.  Though the theater department has held a few small fundraisers in the past, including a car wash, a bigger fundraiser was called upon when funds appeared to be too…

ABC’s new show Happy Town

by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer Murder, mystery, dramatic music -all the ingredients for a perfect scary TV show that have me hooked on ABC’s new show Happy Town. Ironic to the title, the quaint town of Haplin is creepy, its people are creepy and the series of events are creepy and pretty much the exact opposite of anything happy the townspeople could ask for. A quick idea about what the show is about: There’s a town, called Haplin, also known as “Happy Town” (in Minnesota). Its small population is plagued with a history of unsolved kidnappings of their children (main suspect: “Magic Man”) and a recent murder upsets the recovering town. The show is interesting because it…

UIL One-Act stops at area, cast stays positive

Video by Taylor Vowell Story by Daphne Chen Original Video – More videos at TinyPic On April 9 and 10, CHS hosted the area UIL One-Act competition in hopes of advancing their own One-Act, the popular comedy Leading Ladies. Leading Ladies stars seniors Jacob Harpel and Jake McCready, who play two out-of-work actors who pose as a rich woman’s long lost nieces in order to inherit a fortune. However, over the course of the play, the two imposters start to reevaluate their priorities when one falls in love. “It was the first time that for One-Act we actually did a comedy rather than a dramatic play so it was kind of a new experience,” Harpel…

Drama department to hold car wash

Ashleigh Heaton Entertainment Editor The CHS theatre program is holding a car wash fundraiser next Saturday, April 17, at the Seven Eleven on the corner of Sandy Lake and Denton Tap. Anyone who is interested in getting their car squeaky clean (and possibly be entertained by a bunch of theatre kids) should talk to a member of drama club to receive a ticket to the event. Tickets are only $10, and the event will run all day. As for me, my car (Millie) is in need of a good scrubing — and what better way to make her shine than support a great part of our high school?

One-Act to go public tonight

Ashleigh Heaton Entertainment Editor As the Coppell High School UIL One-Act Play troupe prepares for their regional competition on Tuesday, March 30 at Marcus High School, the department is seeking an audience to generate last-minute feedback on the show. One way they are doing this is offering a free performance on Thursday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the CHS auditorium for parents and family members to see the show in its entirety. However, because of popular demand, the crew is opening up their rehearsal tonight, March 23, at 4:30 p.m. for viewers to sit-in on and enjoy. “This is our one-and-only chance for the public to see the One-Act. It is especially important this…

NBC’s “Parenthood” makes comeback

In a blog last week, I called NBC’s pilot episode of  “Parenthood”, “bland”, “unoriginal” and “similar to a re-run of 7th Heaven”.           Can I take it back?           The second episode which aired last night completely reassured my former doubts on the show. I suppose it just needed a starting week to kick off from the ground and really get moving, because this week’s episode was filled with intense drama and interesting plot turns, leaving me itching for more answers by the final scene.         This week , Adam (Peter Krause) and his wife’s son, Max, is diagnosed with Asberger’s Syndrome, causing a great deal of grief and confusion through the entire family. Sarah…

New Season of “Parenthood” brings mixed feelings

By: Renee Rohani Business Manager            NBC’s Pilot episode of “Parenthood” aired Tuesday night, leaving me unsure on whether I actually liked it or not.           The show includes an great cast of Lauren Graham, Peter Krause, and Craig T. Nelson just to name a few. Yet it seriously lacks any originality in plot. I personally found the storyline somewhat bland and essentially overdone. It felt like a re-run of “7th Heaven”.           The storyline follows multiple generations of a family and the ups and down of their lives. Graham plays a divorced mother with two rebellious teenagers. Her brothers, (played by Peter Krause and Dax Shepard), and her sister, (played byErika Christensen) all have their own…

Theatre department laughs it up in Leading Ladies

Ashleigh Heaton Entertainment Editor The University Interscholastic League (UIL) One-Act Play season is amidst us, sparking up a heightened sense of dramatic excellence and fierce competition as schools from across the nation prepare their best actors to perform at the top of their abilities, trying to pull out a performance that will leave their audience in tears. This year, Coppell High School’s theatre department aims to draw these same tears through their play Leading Ladies – tears from uncontrollable laughter, that is. The show follows Jack and Leo, two Shakespearean actors who are so down on their luck that they decide to masquerade as a dying old woman’s long-lost relatives Max and Steve, whom she…
