Pre-teens learn importance of manners, etiquette in Cotillion
By Caroline Carter Staff Writer Every Friday in January and February, middle school students put on their best attire, dancing shoes and white gloves to attend the Jon D. Williams Cotillion in Coppell. Through the program, pre-teens learn the importance of proper manners and the skills needed to be successful as an adult. Founded in 1949 by Jon and Vivian Williams, the JDW Cotillion would eventually impact over 10,000 young people nationwide. The Williams, both of who were professional ballroom dancers, saw the importance of proper etiquette in youth. Now there are over 47 different divisions of Cotillion across the country that annually holds classes. Brought to Coppell in 1997 by Kit Whitehill, the Coppell…
CHS band to compete in BOA contest
By Annie Wen Staff Writer The CHS marching band students will soon be checking in their uniforms and hanging up their shakos for the year. As the marching season comes to an end the band prepares to go out with a bang. The band’s final contest of the year is the Bands of Americas Super-regionals contest to be held in San Antonio on November 5. “This year’s show is a much different show,” director Scott Mason said. “The level of difficulty is much greater than what we’ve done in the past, so it has been somewhat harder to get it all learned to the high level we like. The BOA contest is a very highly…
Silver Stars continue to wow Coppell
By Caroline Carter Staff Writer Coppell High School’s junior varsity drill team, the Silver Stars, have preformed at several different community and high school events in the past month. Though the team has only been together for a few months, they have delivered some fantastic performances. Before school started, the Silver Stars preformed a routine for the freshman pep rally to a remix of Lady Gaga’s “Judas”. This past week they also walked in the Homecoming parade. The Silver Stars preform at several of the freshman and junior varsity games. Their upcoming performances are on September 28 at 5:30, October 6 at 7:00, and October 27 at 5:30.
Freshman back to school dance
By Chase Porter Staff Writer On Saturday, September 10th the Coppell High School Red Jackets will be hosting the Freshman back to school dance. The dance will be held in the large commons from 7 to 11. Tickets are being sold during all lunches this week and are only 5 dollars. The dance will have drinks, snacks, a DJ, and other activities if your not into dancing including ping pong. As a senior and Red Jacket, I advise all freshman to attend this dance not just because it will be extremely fun but also to meet other freshman that you may not be able to meet in the classroom setting. I know exactly what your…
Prom time
Chris Cummins Staff Writer Prom has come and gone, bringing with it a feast of photos for Facebook aficionados to gorge themselves on, as well as memories that (as we are told) will last a lifetime. In the days after the dance, however, one of the biggest topics of conversation was not the dance itself, nor the time spent with friends and dates, but the immense cost of the dance itself. Over and over, many people swore that, due mainly to the cost, Prom wasn’t worth it. Some said that if they had the choice to go to the dance a second time, they would most likely not go. Dinner, limo tickets, professional photography in some…
Prom: how did you get asked?
Ashley Attanucci Web Manager Molly Robben “I was leaving school and walking to my car when I noticed something in it. As I got closer I realized there balloons in it. I had no idea what was going on. It was filled to the top with balloons and there wasn’t anything else, so I called Philip Hanson and he told me to go home. I wasn’t expecting anything at all. It was a total surprise, especially when all my friends, family and some of my teachers were in on the plan without me knowing. Around 500 balloons filled my car and room and some of the balloons in my room had notes in them, so…
A Party in the U.S.A
by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer This past weekend for Coppell was marked with everything Homecoming –the parade, the football game and, for students, the Homecoming dance, appropriately themed “Party in the U.S.A”. While students were dancing Saturday night away at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas, they did not forget to remember the ninth year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Midway through the dance, the music stopped as Principal Hunt took over the mic to commemorate the tragedy. After Alanna Diggs, junior, and Kaci Carroll, sophomore, sang the National Anthem, students observed a moment of silence for remembrance. 9/11 –we shall never forget.
Behind the Scenes: DFW Dragon Boat Festival
Story by Daphne Chen Video by Jacob Harpel and Kyle Kirby Photo Gallery by Daphne Chen On Sunday, May 16, Irving residents may have heard the sound of beating drums, the smell of fresh pad thai and the cheers of Dallas residents watching dragon boat teams race across Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas. Behind the scenes of the fourth annual DFW Dragon Boat Festival, however, were performers and volunteers who often had been there since early in the morning, making sure the event went smoothly. The event kicked off early in the morning with several musical and cultural performances, such as Emily Lo of Plano Shepton High School, who not only played on the 21-string Chinese…

Former CHS Student Dances Nights Away
By Angela Almeida Opinions Editor Daniel Almeida is a household name for me, literally. He is my brother and a current sophomore at Penn State University. In high school, he was never the “involved” type. In fact, he shied away from pretty much any function entailing varsity letters or checks for attendance. In college, however, he leads a much different life. As evidence of this, today he will be one of roughly 700 dancers to participate in Penn State’s annual 48-hour dance marathon or “THON”. Benefiting cancer research for children, THON raised about $7.5 million just last year. It is charitable while being one of the most intense experiences any Penn State student can endure. That is,…
