Pirates of the Caribbean finally walks the plank

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Webmaster Is two hours and 16 minutes a short runtime for a film? For the Pirates of the Caribbean series, it is. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth and shortest installment in the very successful Disney franchise, I hate to say is boring and repetitive. Basically, Jack Sparrow needs to find a new career, the Black Pearl needs to sink already and executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer needs to find something else to get excited about. There was nothing special about this film. We once again, find ourselves sailing along with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he sets out in a race against time, the British and the…

Bynum, Lakers show classless exit against Mavs

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Webmaster *UPDATE* (5/11/10) Andrew Bynum has been suspended for five games next year according the NBA for his flagrant foul on JJ Barea. Bynum was also fined $25,000 for removing his jersey as he exited the court. In those five games, Bynum will lose $702,272 overall. I have no respect for the Los Angeles Lakers. They are cheap, dirty sore losers, and they are an embarrassment to the National Basketball Association and the morals that it stands for. As a non-Laker NBA fan, I’ve had my share of anger felt moments toward the team. Let’s face it; the Lakers are a great team outside of this series, and they probably will…

Sucker Punch fails to produce a knockout

By Wren Culp Staff Writer Reality is a prison and only your mind can set you free. Everything your mind creates to escape reality, you control. But the question remains, can Sucker Punch control its own world? Sucker Punch follows the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning), a girl locked away in an insane asylum after being framed by her stepfather for the death of her younger sister. In the insane asylum, she meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung), all girls seeking the same thing: freedom. While in the asylum, the girls are instructed to dance as a way to let go of the harsh realities…

Battle: Los Angeles invades theaters

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Webmaster In a typical alien invasion movie, funky looking, intelligent creatures with cool weapons invade Earth for no discernible reason and start killing humans without warning. However, this is not the case for Battle: Los Angeles, as the aliens in the film have one goal in mind: colonization. Battle: Los Angeles follows the story of Sgt. Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), a near-retired Marine who is ready to get out of the Army. He is haunted by his last tour in Iraq, where he caused his squad to be killed and effects his decisions throughout the invasion. As strange clusters of meteors begin to hit the ground, scientists quickly discover they do…

Depp tangos with Rango

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Webmaster What do you get when you cross an emotionally confused pet lizard, the vast Mojave desert, slick animation and a adrenaline pumping score from Hans Zimmer? You get Rango. Rango is the story of a small lizard (Johnny Depp) who is trying to fit in with his surroundings, both literally and figuratively. A wanna-be actor, Rango is always playing with beat up props, trying to find out where he fits in. One day Rango accidentally gets tossed out of the back of his owners car right in the middle of the Mojave desert and is left to fend for himself. After battling a harsh climate and hungry hawks, he winds…

Unknown: a horrible case of déjà vu

By Wren Culp Staff Writer/Web Mananger Oh, what a career Liam Neeson has had. Going from being a fork-lift operator to a considerable actor, Neeson has soared into the spotlight with countless hits like Schindler’s List and Taken, and now he has returned to the big screen with his latest movie, Unknown. As a movie buff, I noticed the trailers for films are often better, just as good or worse than the movies themselves. But when I saw the trailer for Unknown, I definitely didn’t know what to expect. The trailer shows Martin Harris (Neeson) get into a car accident while in Germany and almost drown before he is saved by the cab driver. When…
