Choir students prepare for UIL

By Jordan Thompson Staff Writer It seems that recently there is no time for choir members to ‘rest.’ Just as the singers finish their winter concerts and TMEA state auditions, the Solo and Ensemble UIL competitions and voice recitals are added to their list of unfinished responsibilities. Students participating in Solo and ensemble must prepare to sing a song that could range from difficulty levels between 1 and 3 in front of a judge. Students earning a ‘one’ rating on a class one piece are eligible for state. First they will perform their song at the Coppell Conservatory on Feb 7th and 8th. On Feb 16th they will travel by bus to a Magnet school…

Five CHS students make All-State Choir

By Michelle Pitcher Editor-in-Chief This past Saturday, 11 CHS choir students made a trip to Waco to participate in the Area round audition for the 2012 TMEA All-State Choir. Of the 11 who auditioned, five were selected to participate in this prestigious group. Seniors Rachael Swaldi and Kristy Liang, juniors Sarah Bauer and Jenna Hernandez, and sophomore Wesley Szalkowski were ranked among the top 12 at the audition. Bauer was selected for the Mixed Choir, and the rest for the Treble choir. After having record-breaking numbers advance from Coppell in the past few rounds, the CHS choir department is proud of this year’s accomplishments and is looking forward to more success in years to come.

By Christina Burke Staff Writer A large crowd poured into the Coppell High School Auditorium on Nov. 18 and 19 for the highly anticipated Vivacé! show choir performance. Excited friends, family and Vivacé! fans filled the seats anxiously before the curtains drew back for the annual Vivacé! Dessert Show. Sophomore Holly Swaldi attends all the Vivacé! shows to support her sister, senior Rachael Swaldi. “I enjoy coming to the shows to watch my sister perform. She has a great voice, and they always put on an entertaining show,” Holly said. After a brief introduction from director Albert Torres, the crowd went wild as the show began. “Party Rock Anthem” blasted through the auditorium as all…

Mormons embrace unique niche at CHS

Thomas Hair Online Copy Editor If one were to walk through the door of any classroom at Coppell High School, they would immediately encounter a combination of various cultures and ethnicities. In this day and age, diversity is prized, and direct interaction with other beliefs is encouraged. One often-overlooked belief in Coppell’s assortment of religions is that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – more commonly known as the Mormon church. Despite being the sixth largest religion in America, with a membership claimed to be over six million, Mormons are still not adequately understood by many Americans. Essentially, Mormonism is another breed of Christianity characterized by the belief in modern-day prophets of…

CHS choirs prepare for trip to Italy

by Lauren Ussery Centerspread Editor Video by Jen Olsen Spring Break 2011 will be an eventful one for many students at Coppell High School, with the band heading to Chicago and the Lariettes traveling to New York City. However, none of these trips can quite compare to what choir has in store. For many CHS varsity choir students, Spring Break will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a trip to Italy to perform at the Vatican. The choir generally travels abroad every three years, to New York every two years, and makes a local trip for the other years. This schedule ensures that four-year choir students have at least one opportunity to travel abroad during their…

Coppell Choirs do well at Solo and Ensemble

Beth Anne Carroll Staff Writer The Coppell High School choirs competed at the Region XX Solo and Ensemble competition this past weekend and did very well. The competition took place at Townview High School on Saturday and several CHS singers qualified for the state competition in May at the University of Texas. At the contest, students perform their solos in front of a judge and are scored based on their performance. They are judged on musicality and performance and are awarded a score of one to five, one being superior. If a student receives a I on a class I song, they qualify for the state contest. Students from all levels of the Coppell choir…

CHS choir concert proves successful

Zeb White Asst. Business Manager, Staff Writer On Tuesday, Coppell High School’s choir department held its annual fall choir concert featuring all ten of the award-winning CHS choirs. As expected, the event was a success. The evening began with the Acapella (the top varsity mixed choir) performing the National Anthem. Students may recognize this rousing interpretation, as it is performed at every pep rally. Following Acapella were the CMS West honor choir, Treble Choir, Concert Choir, Select Women’s, Varsity Women’s, Varsity Men’s, Brava!, Bel Canto, Vivace!, and Madrigals. Then Acapella returned to the stage to end the night with the soft, inspiring tune of “Sure on this Shining Night” and the haunting melody of “Daemon Irrepit…

Coppell hits a high note with students advancing to Regional auditions

This past weekend, Coppell hosted the first round of the 2010-2001 All-State  auditions. Not only did our school facilitate the event, but we just so happened to dominate it as well. Twenty-seven of our students advanced past District Auditions and will now proceed to Region on October 16th. These students had little time to celebrate their impressive accomplishment though, as the next round is in less than three weeks. With all their attention focused on the pieces used for the first audition, many singers have not had the chance to practice any other pieces until now. Because of this, many are struggling to learn and perfect the next four songs, one of which is in…

Choir members all in unison regarding upcoming district auditions

Ask any choir member in the school, and they will tell you that this Saturday is approaching far too quickly. On Saturday, September 25, CHS will host the first round of Texas All-State choir auditions. Students from across North Texas will gather in our cafeteria early Saturday morning . After waiting in long registration lines, they will receive the “cuts” (certain parts from the audition pieces that will be sung for the audition). They will then be allowed to sing through these cuts only once all together, then no singing is permitted within the waiting area (cafeteria). The audition, though seemingly never-ending, is the least stressful part about the All-State process. Many choir students say…

A Party in the U.S.A

by Ashley Attanucci Staff Writer This past weekend for Coppell was marked with everything Homecoming –the parade, the football game and, for students, the Homecoming dance, appropriately themed “Party in the U.S.A”. While students were dancing Saturday night away at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas, they did not forget to remember the ninth year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Midway through the dance, the music stopped as Principal Hunt took over the mic to commemorate the tragedy. After Alanna Diggs, junior, and Kaci Carroll, sophomore, sang the National Anthem, students observed a moment of silence for remembrance. 9/11 –we shall never forget.
