Competitive cheerleading proves huge time commitment for girls
By Caroline Carter Staff Writer Back tucks, toe touches and round offs: all basic skills needed to excel at cheerleading. November marks the beginning of competitive cheerleading, a huge undertaking for many high school girls. Most girls participating in high school cheer are also involved in competitive cheerleading outside of school. The two main teams in the area are Spirit of Texas and Cougar Cheer. Sophomore Mikayla Wecker, a member of the CHS JV cheer team, is in her fourth year as a competitive cheerleader and is currently on Cougar Cheer. “When you are on high school cheer, it is not all about talent and skill level,” Wecker said. “It is about cheering your team…
First pep rally a success
By Caroline Carter Staff Writer Friday September 2, Coppell High School had their first pep rally of the year. With different performances, it definitely pumped up the students for tonight’s game versus the Arlington Colts. The out door pep rally was a great experience for the students of CHS. However, halfway though the routine, there was some technical issues with the music. The cheerleaders continued to preform and finished the dance…
CHS cheerleading tryouts brings new squads to the sidelines
Abby Drake Staff Writer Last Friday marked the end to the 2011 Coppell High School cheerleading tryouts and the introduction of three new squads. This is a hard time for many girls who aspire to be the spirit of CHS, since a lot of hard work goes into the tryout process but not every single girl gets to be on the team. After a week of learning a new dance and cheer, perfecting jumps and mastering the perfect tumbling the results are either very rewarding or very upsetting. Each squad, freshman, JV and varsity, has limited amount of spots and they spots go to who ever has the most impressive skills in tumbling, jumping, dancing…
Cheerleaders head off to Long Beach
Abby Drake Staff Writer After an amazing win in January 2011 where the Coppell High School Varsity cheerleading team brought home first place and a national title, they are off to California to take on a new wave of components. Every other year the CHS Varsity cheerleaders choose a competition outside of Texas to compete in. The team travels together and spends part of the trip performing and competing with their routine and the other parts bonding as a team. Typically the team chooses a place that is warm and sunny such as Hawaii and California. Next week the cheerleaders are heading to Long Beach California to show the other half of the US what…
Christmas cheer in the math department
The math department has decided to gather up money to donate to a Christmas angle tree. But the math department has also decided to help spread the holiday cheer by turning this simple donation excersise into a raffel. Up for grabs are two parking spots the math department gained in the turkey drive weeks earlier. The tickets will be selling at one ticket for $5 or three for $10. The winners of the raffel will be allowed to park in the two “prime” spots the week of Dec. 14 – 18. The department will be accepting all donations, regardless of ticket sales. The raffel will be open only to other teachers.
