Obama goes back to Washington
Chris Cummins Staff Writer Obama’s much-heralded move to the center has occurred. A day ago, Democrats accepted the new balance of power in the House and Senate, and passed the Bush-era tax cuts. Coming at a time when the president’s power is at an all time low, the passage of a compromise bill is perhaps but the first sign of Obama’s turn to the center. Passed at midnight, the bill extends tax cuts for both the rich and the middle class that George W. Bush passed as part of his eight years in office. The reason the bill was subject to such scrutiny because it is a watershed moment in the new 111th Congress. The…
Bill and Barack
Chris Cummins Staff Writer Today, Bill Clinton held a press conference to throw his support behind President Obama’s tax bill. That sentence is about the most telling, and accuate summation of Mr. Obama’s presidency, in it’s own way. Mr. Obama has spent these first two years of his term alienating those in the center, first with the crude passage of the health care bill, and those in the left, with his unwillingness to churn out reliably left wing legislation, and with his agreeing to compromise on the tax cuts and similar right wing legislation. With the recent midterm election results, in which the Democratic party lost the House and their majority in the Senate was lessened, it seeemed…
Florida Senate Race Grows Ever Tighter
By: Chris Cummins Staff Writer In one of the most important, most tightly contested Senate race in the midterms, in one of the most diverse states in the nation, a white man has convinced voters to stop voting for a black man. Who could do this without being nationally vilified? Why, Bill Clinton, of course. The race in Florida is one of the closest and interesting political spectacles in ages, with former governor Charlie Crist, ousted by the GOP, running as an independent, opposite an anointed son of the Tea Party, Marco Rubio, with the Democrat candidate, a black Representative, Kendrick Meek, bringing up the rear guard. Riding the wave of Tea Party support, Rubio…
Health summit a war of attrition
There was no progress at the bipartisan health care summit today, although no one was really expecting any. I predicted a political slug-fest in this post two weeks ago, and it would seem I was correct. Both Republicans and Democrats have used the televised summit to beat each other over the heads with their own talking points. Democrats have attempted to label the GOP as obstructionist, and Republicans have accused Democrats of acting against the will of the nation. Some speculate that, because of the lack of cooperation, Democrats will attempt to push the bill through the Senate by a process known as reconciliation, which only requires bills have 51 votes to pass. Commentators, who…
Quentin Tarantino, Thank you.
By Wren Culp Staff Writer I got really excited the other night. Not about football, and not about the lights over Norway. It’s a film that is coming out soon. The third movie to one of the greatest movie series of all time. Quentin Tarantino. The name will be remembered forever in the movie world. He has only directed five films and yet every single one turns into a masterpiece. And now, the new Tarantino film set to be released in 2014 as the seventh film is going to rock the nation. KILL BILL 3 I started freaking out when I read that Tarantino was revisiting Uma Thurman’s character “Beatrix Kiddo”. In the special features…
The question is no longer up for debate
It’s undeniable. We cannot debate it any longer. And on Sunday night we got the defining reason on why the Indianapolis Colts are the best football team in the league right now. This season the argument has come down between two teams, the Colts and the Saints. Let’s look at how each team did in week 10. The Saints traveled to St. Louis to battle the Rams in what seemed to be another easy victory for the unbeaten team. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was 18-for-26 for 223 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Not horrible but certainly not where he should be at the moment. The 9-0 Colts stayed at home to take on…
