It’s all in the cards
By John Loop Staff Writer Your granddad has probably shown you his collection of vintage baseball cards. You probably just said, “OK. Whatever, Grandpa. Can I go watch more TV now?” But back in his time, those pieces of lifeless paper made players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jackie Robinson come alive. Children would spread their cards out on the floor and work out multiple exchanges until they were satisfied with their holdings. Now, I may or may not be the biggest sports fan on the planet. I could name you almost every player who plays on each team in any sport, what position they play, for how many years and what college they…
Cowboy Baseball has first scrimmage at Prosper with 22-8 blowout
By Ben Cowlishaw Online Copy Editor Coppell Cowboys Baseball had their first scrimmage last night against the Prosper High School Eagles. The Cowboys lit up the Eagles, scoring 22 runs and allowing only eight over the more than four-hour scrimmage. With all players putting on a showcase of their abilities, the batting looked steady and strong throughout. They launched several long balls over Prosper’s own “Green Monster” in left field, including a grand slam courtesy Tyler Jacquess in the 13th inning. As most of the players were given at bats in the scrimmage, it was evident there is sufficient power present in the entire team’s lineup. With multiple hits in nearly every inning, the Cowboys…
“Yeah, I like Texas; ain’t it fine here”
By Ben Cowlishaw Online Copy Editor Over the past six months, I’ve watched 26 live dot races (or the occasional “Legends” race), I know Pat Green’s “I Like Texas” by heart, and have learned to appreciate the foul stench of garlic fries. There has been no greater influence on the last six months of my life than the Rangers. The Rangers have taken priority over my job, school, and (I’ll admit) my family. I feel extremely lucky to have had tickets to every home postseason Ranger game; few ever have a chance in their life to experience something as incredible as that. Last night, as I witnessed the Rangers’ 4-2 win over the Cardinals, putting…
Ranger’s win gives students chance to spread spirit even longer
by Coleman Armes Staff Writer With the Texas Ranger’s win today over the Tampa Bay Rays they advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row. They will wait to see if they face either the Detroit Tigers or New York Yankees. However what team they play doesn’t matter. This win today provided something great for most Coppell High School students. More chances to brag and show off their loyalty or in some cases their bandwagon ways for the Rangers. The claws and antlers are out in full force. This is also affecting student’s ability to concentrate in class due to students constantly checking the scores. If the trend continues like last year there will be no stopping the crazy Coppell students/extreme fans until the Rangers lose or win…
Rangers’ fans wave goodbye to attempted ban
Students at CHS have many opportunities to showcase their school spirit and pride at the multitude of sporting events played at home. But some of the local professional sports teams aren’t as forgiving. Rangers fans who live in the area will meet no such resistance to revive the wave, a ballpark tradition for a long time. This came after Chuck Morgan, Senior Vice-President of In-Ballpark Entertainment at the Ballpark in Arlington, apologized for his snide campaign to take away fans’ enjoyment of our nation’s pastime. According to Greg Holland, author of www.Stopthewave.com, and leader of the front, the wave should only be started under certain circumstances, including during a playoff game or if the home…
Cowboys look to obtain series lead following rescheduling
By Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor Coming off a series sweep of Flower Mound last weekend, the Coppell Cowboys baseball team begins their second round series tonight against L.D. Bell with hopes of opening a 1-0 series lead. The series was slated to begin last night in Coppell, but rain from the previous night left the field too wet to play on. The Cowboys will instead host game two at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and game three (if necessary) thirty minutes after the second game ends. The Cowboys will look to replicate their first round success in this series, as they won by scores of 9-2 and 12-0 in their two games against Flower Mound. The…
Baseball Team continues winning streak, nears end of regular season
Thomas Hair Staff Writer It has been a long season for the Coppell Cowboys Baseball Team. The Cowboys have played 33 games over the course of the year, and now, they are finally coming down the home stretch with only one game remaining. It has also been an extremely successful season for Don English’s squad, with a record of 25-6-2 being one of the best for the team in recent years. The Cowboys’ dominance all year long has launched them into high positions on the State and National high school baseball rankings. On Saturday April 23, the Cowboys stretched their winning streak to five games with a 13-1 beat down of the Naaman Forest Rangers….
Cowboys to take on first place Dragons this afternoon
By Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor The Coppell Cowboys baseball team (8-2) sits in second place of District 7-5A, sitting two games behind the first place Southlake Carroll Dragons (10-0). This afternoon, they will look to narrow the gap in the divisional race, as they travel to Dragons Stadium at 4:00 p.m. to take on Southlake Carroll. The Dragons won the first game against 8-0 in Coppell, which handed the Cowboys their second district loss of the year. Since, Coppell is yet to lose, and they are eager to continue their hot play and cut into the Dragons’ district lead with a win today. The Cowboys will be in good hands on the mound, as they…
Cowboys extend district win streak to five
Peter Sblendorio Sports Editor Following an embarrassing 8-0 loss to Southlake Carroll on March 22, the Coppell Cowboys baseball team fell to 2-2 in district play. Since then, however, the team has been firing on all cylinders, and they have won five district matchups in a row. Coppell started the turnaround with a strong 8-3 win over Justin Northwest on March 25, and then made a statement with a 23-5 rout over Keller. They followed those games the next week with a 3-0 win over Keller Central and a 12-4 win over Saginaw. The Cowboys most recent win came tonight against Denton Guyer by the score of 8-4. They were led by the pitching of Conner…
Varsity Baseball hits streak with win over Saginaw
Thomas Hair Staff Writer The CHS Varsity Baseball Team easily disposed of Saginaw earlier tonight, racking up the runs en route to a 12-4 victory. This was the Cowboys’ best display of scoring power since their 23-5 massacre of Keller weeks ago. Tonight’s thrashing of Saginaw was a strong home win for the Cowboys as they come down the final stretch of district play and serves as a testament to how dangerous the Cowboys could be in the playoffs. With only eight games remaining, the Cowboys have compiled an impressive 19-5-2 record. Coach Don English’s squad has had a landmark year for the program thus far, being one of the clear favorites to win district. Leaders such…
