Story by Allie Perison
Editor in Chief

Senior Morgan Smith establishes her own take on the world through the lens of her camera. After taking photojournalism sophomore year, Smith realized that her interest in photography was both a talent and a passion of hers.

“Taking a really good picture and seeing it turn out makes me feel so accomplished,” Smith said. “People say to do what you love, and I love taking pictures. I don’t want to rely on it or taint it with being a full-time career, but it will always be something I do.”

While Smith does not plan on making photography her career, she does intend to keep it present in her future. Next year, Smith will be attending Tyler Junior College majoring in dental hygiene and minoring in photography.

“I want to do photography on the side,” Smith said. “It is something that allows you to be really flexible. It is fun, but I don’t do it to get paid.”

Smith first became

“I don’t think Morgan had intended on taking yearbook when she started, but after I saw what she could do I knew she had to join,” Pellegrino said. “It was obvious from the start the potential she had.”

Serving as the student life editor of the 2010 Round-Up Yearbook, Smith’s favorite subject to capture is human emotion. She has even earned some extra cash for such photography by shooting weddings, engagement pictures and senior portraits.

“Morgan’s photos are not artsy or bold in color,” senior Round-Up staff member Meredith McDonald said. “They are never posed or planned. She does something that a lot of people want to achieve. She captures moments.”

While Smith does not consider herself to have a distinct style of picture taking, she plans on developing it more through experimentation.

“One of my favorite pictures I have taken is of a sailboat in a bottle,” Smith said. “My dad passed away and it was something that he gave to my mom. That picture holds so much emotion – it really means something. It is amazing to be able to portray that and bring that out for other people to feel.”

This year some of Smith’s work was recognized in the Josten’s Lookbook contest, winning first place in black and white portraits and honorable mention in pictorials, winning her a prize of $500 and a tripod. She plans to use the money for college book expenses.

Despite Smith not planning to pursue photography as her main career, her photo legacy at Coppell High School will live on through the pictures that grace the pages of this year’s yearbook.

“I am going to be sad to see her go,” Pellegrino said. “She is a strong photographer and designer. She has talent that you don’t see all the time on top of being a sweet and driven girl. She is going to go far.”

Though he hummed the first 8 notes of the Barney song before he could even talk, senior Aaron Endelman is attending New York University’s Tisch program in the fall and is going to study film writing.

Music is as much a passion for him as script writing. He can play the French horn, the guitar and the piano and plays in a band with friends.

“I’m in a band named Zoo Time Politics,” Endelman said. “It’s me, Kyle Willis, Sam Leven and Zack Cruz. I write most of the stuff and I sing for it and we just put our music on iTunes. So you can buy our album for like four dollars.”

The NYU Tisch program for the Arts is one of the top schools in the country for film. Although Endelman is majoring in film, he is not as familiar with it as he is music.

“My brother and I used to make videos with a random camera we had but they would just be the two of us being really weird,” Endelman said. “That’s the extent of my experience. And then for the film application I had to make a short film, but I didn’t really know what I was doing. It was okay, but I mostly just liked writing it. I just sent my script into Tisch, and it turned out well.”

A passion for music runs in the family for Endelman, whose brother Seth also plays the guitar and sings.

“Both of us sing and play guitar all the time,” he said. “Sometimes my friends mistake his playing and singing for mine. He just started guitar but he’s getting pretty good.”

His mom always encouraged him to pursue not just music, but acting as well.

“My mom really encouraged me,” Endelman said. “I took acting lessons for a while and I took theater and all that too. I was supposed to get an agent or something but my dad didn’t want me to. My mom’s always supported my music too. She’s the one who bought me an electric guitar first which got me into other
music.”

Aaron’s mom says that her son has always been interested in music.

“We started him and his siblings playing the piano when he was in third grade,” she said. “After that, whenever he showed interest in another instrument, he got lessons.”

Both of Endelman’s parents are musically inclined and participated in the fine arts in high school.

“I played percussion and was in choir in school,” she said. “His father was in high school and community theater musicals. But he has a cousin currently studying at Julliard and his aunt has sung with the San Francisco Symphony chorus for many years.”

Mrs. Endelman said that Aaron can across the Tisch program because of its legendary film school.

“He used the internet to investigate the best film schools in the nation,” she said. “We took him to visit the 2 top programs. He felt that New York and the Tisch program was the best fit for his personality. It also had the best internship potential and better allowed him to pursue his musical avocation.”

“Aaron has a really good singing voice and he’s a really good musician,” senior Lauren Lyssy. “He taught himself piano over the summer, which is really hard to do.”

Endelman is excited about his opportunities offered at NYU.

“I went up and visited NYU for the Accepted Students Weekend ,” he said. “Everyone there plays guitar or does something musical even though they might be majoring in something different. You can do so much through the Tisch program so I’m really excited to get involved. I’m going to focus on film writing and local production. You can get internships as a freshman which is really cool.”

Still, Endelman is not giving up hopes of a possible music career.

“I’m still going to do music, he said. “If the whole film thing falls through, it’s good to know I could just form a world-sensation band like the Beatles.”

Senior Benita Thomas will be visiting India. In addition to having a vacation and getting a chance to reunite with family and friends, Thomas will be performing dance routines.

“I’ve been preparing for the last few months and get the chance to do so dances that I’ve been doing in my life in a place that has created them,” Thomas said. “It is a chance to have a better understanding of who I am and where I came from.”

The trip will be Thomas’ in five years.

“It’s been five years since I have been to India,” Thomas said. “I get to see so many people I love for the first time in a while. Also, unlike when I was younger, I will really begin to appreciate India’s beauty and not be unaware of my surrounds. It’s going to be a bittersweet moment for me since I am now ‘grown-up’ and it’ll be my last trip for a while.”

Furthermore, senior Jennifer Song will be going back to South Korea with her aunt and cousins, however, with a tiny excursion in between there and America.
For a few weeks before heading for her home country, she will spend time in Tokyo. There, she hopes to reunite with some friends, who have moved there, meeting at halfway point through the magnet train.

“I am actually going to Japan because the airlines ran out of flights to Korea until August,” Song said. “But I realized I also get to meet up with some people from Coppell, including Kaoru Nakagawa, who I have not seen in years.I’m excited to go to Japan just because I have heard so many weird, but cool places that I have to visit for things like clothes.”

In addition, she sees the South Korea trip as the last hurrah before heading off to University of Texas.

“Once I become independent in college, this chance won’t be here,” Song said. “I get to reconnect with my culture and family for one last time.”

Senior Hiba Mirza will be going to Pakistan. However, unlike Thomas, she has frequently visited the country, notably this past March for a personal family matter.

“I am hoping this trip will be more about relaxing more than anything,” Mirza said. “I have been really lucky to be able to go to so many times that it will be weird not to have that chance once I head off to college.”

For these three seniors and many others, these trips are not just about the sense of adventure or just having fun, rather they are about going to a place that gave them one part of their identity. It’s about moving forward by looking back.

The stage is her home. When she sings, she comes to life. For senior Dinah Smith, her music is her passion and her life.

Smith is one student who will not give up on her passions. Smith has been singing since she could walk and has been in choir since middle school and plans to stay in choir for her next four years in college.

Come this fall, Smith will move to Nashville to attend Belmont University and major in Church Music.

“I chose Belmont because it has a really prestigious music program and it had my specific Church Music major,” Smith said. “I really love the atmosphere of Nashville; it’s the Christian Music Capitol of the world. People say that Nashville is the friendliest city in the world, and it has proven true based on my experiences.”

Smith has been fortunate enough to already have experience in her major.

“Sophomore year, I started leading worship with the high school band at my church, Irving Baptist Church,” Smith said. “I really enjoyed it, and was asked to start leading the adult worship team. It was then that I realized that this is what I want to do. I think I’m lucky that I’m already getting to do what I want to do as an adult when I am 17 and 18.”

For Smith, choosing a major involving religion was an easy decision, as her faith is the core of all she does.

“My faith is my guiding force,” Smith said. “It is my belief that every person is put on this Earth to use their gifts for God. I feel like I owe God this, and I love leading worship. I get to have my own worship experience while leading others in their own experience, it’s very special.”

In high school, Smith has been involved in the concert choir, select women’s choir, Madrigals, the acapella choir and the varsity women’s choir. In theatre, Smith has been in the musicals all four years. Smith has also been a member of the National Honor Society for all three years at CHS.

“[My high school involvement] has hugely helped me grow as an individual musician,” Smith said. “It has allowed me to experience every side of music, and expand my knowledge of music. The theatre side of my music has taught me about performance. If I ever decide to pursue being a musical artist, I will know how to sell it. Choir has taught me how to be a leader and part of a team; before being a leader while being captain, I was a team member.”

Of all of her high school accomplishments, one distinct achievement stands out in Smith’s eyes.

“Absolutely without a doubt, I am most proud of my captainship of Madrigals and particularly our success at the Madrigals Festival,” Smith said.

On March 6, the Madrigals competed in the Madrigal festival and received the honor of first runner up.

“Dinah is an extremely talented musician that knows how to lead the choir and help make it the best it can be,” fellow senior Madrigal captain Chris Scoular said. “For the most part, working with Dinah was extremely enjoyable.”

Dinah’s parents share in the pride of her accomplishments and character.
“She is a woman of integrity and honesty, she holds her core principles very dear, and allows herself to be guided by them in all her decisions,” Dinah’s father Whitney Smith said. “She’s creative, passionate and talented; she has a really sharp sense of humor, she’s a natural born leader, she’s wise beyond her years, and she is as good a friend as anyone will ever have. Besides her musical talents, she’s also a natural actress and has amazing writing skills.”

Her friends, peers and all who know her can attest to her character.

“Dinah’s one of those people that everyone wishes they were friends with,” senior Mary Beth Walker said. “She’s definitely going to go as far as she wants in life with her talent and goofy personality.”

Smith has already had the privilege to record some of her music.

“For Christmas freshman year, my dad got me some time in a recording studio,” Dinah said. “At that time, I hadn’t written any songs yet. After that, we bought some computes to do some amateur recordings to record songs I have written.”

With all of the opportunities and success that Dinah has come in contact with, her parents do their best to be supportive and open as many doors as possible for her.

Following CISD’s new policy change regarding laptop computers in the classroom and cell phones during passing periods, the allowance of phones during class hours may not be an unattainable dream much longer.

Many students at CHS believe that using cell phones, more accurately iPhones is extremely beneficial in the classroom.

“I think that using phones is actually really helpful because you can look up things much easier rather than having to go to a computer,” junior Ryan Williams said. “Instead of taking the entire class to the computer lab, people can just pull out their phones and Google something really quickly.”

Several classrooms, including senior Meredith McDonald’s economics class, are already allowing iPhones for things pertaining to the curriculum.

“My class uses iPhones to look up stocks and other things,” McDonald said. “There is a special application for the national deficit clock and that’s something that we can’t find in the book because the numbers are always changing. In cases like that, our phones are more accurate than our textbooks.”

For senior Joey McKillop, the measurement converter application comes in handy for several classes including math and science. Other students including senior Jordan Elgin use the Spanish translation application rather than consulting a dictionary every time he needs a word.

Sophomore Aja Zarrehparvar loves her flashcard application.

“I have this app where I can put in any definition and words I want and it makes digital flashcards for me,” Zarrehparvar said. “I use it for so many of my classes and it’s awesome because you can share them with other people that have iPhones.”

During his first week of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, the only thing Austin Welty wanted to do was quit. However, his family encouraged him to stick it out for a few more months and then make his decision.

Three years later, he is the head drum major of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band for the 2010-2011 school year.

Welty, a 2006 Coppell graduate, was encouraged by family friend Jack Conner to look into joining the corps. Conner, a former Corps member graduated class of ’81, and knew what a good opportunity the corps was to get involved with the university.

Throughout high school, Welty played the tuba in the CHS marching band. He continued when he joined the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band as a bass (tuba). As always, the 300 member band is led by two associate and one head drum major.

“The five yell leaders and the three drum majors help to represent the university,” junior and sister Melissa Welty said “They meet with the president and a bunch of other important people. He’s also extremely involved in making decisions about the band.”

In one glance at the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, one can plainly see that Welty plays a major role as their leader. He will lead them during every halftime show for the year.

“It’s going to be an incredible feeling seeing him leading 300 people on Kyle Field in front of thousands more people,” Melissa Welty said. “It will also be fun to watch him at other big places, like when we play at the Dallas Cowboys stadium.”

It is a huge honor to be selected as a drum major, much less the head drum major. The audition process is a two month tryout process. Initially, any junior can try out for drum major and about 25 people took this opportunity.

“During the first month, the former drum majors teach us all of the different conducting movements, different whistle blasts (the Aggie Band uses whistles to signal a new movement), and various other things that a Drum Major needs to know,” Austin Welty said. “After the first month, there is a preliminary tryout in front of the three directors and three former drum majors. This tryout narrows it down to eight candidates.”

Following the preliminary tryout, there is another month of practicing and perfecting every detail because even the slightest mistake can take you out of the running. The final tryout is a two part process. In the morning, the candidates have to conduct two songs in front of the entire band.

The second part is leading the band in a short drill, similar to something the band would do in a half time show. This part is important because the drum major candidate explains and teaches the drill to the band on the spot, so it gauges how well the drum major can teach. After the second part, the directors and former drum majors have a meeting where they discussed each candidate. The three drum majors are announced that same day.

“Almost on a weekly basis, we hear from old Aggies who were in the band decades ago come back and give us compliments,” Welty said. “I have always wanted to lead the Aggie Band, so trying out was something I’ve waited for since I was in high school.”

Now that the wait is over and Welty has been named head drum major, he is ready to begin preparing for the fall football season.

“I can’t wait to work with the other drum majors and the other leaders in the band to make it a great and successful year,” Welty said. “Most college students can’t wait for summer to start; I can’t wait for it to be over so I can go and do my job.”

The summer before college is usually a time for seniors to spend time with family and friends that they will leave behind when they leave for school in the fall. However, for many seniors, summer is a time to get a head start on school or sports at the schools they will be attending.

Attending summer school is very common among seniors at CHS. Many students are provisionally accepted to the school of their choice which usually includes taking school during the summer.

Leann Keach is one of the seniors who were provisionally accepted to the school of her choice. She will be attending Texas A&M in the fall, but first, she will take a few courses through the Gateway Program at A&M.

“A&M was my first choice in colleges,” Keach said. “I was willing to take summer school if it meant that I would be able to attend A&M in the end. I am excited about getting a head start in school too.”

Not all students are forced to take summer school, though. Jeff Johnson is choosing to take summer school just because he wants to. He will be leaving in the middle of June for summer school at the University of Texas.

“A lot of people view summer school as annoying and most people wouldn’t do it if they had to,” Johnson said. “In my opinion, summer school will be beneficial for me because I will be able to get acquainted with the school and meet a bunch of new people, as well as be ahead in school. My sister did summer school before her first year of college and she said that even if you don’t have to, summer school is actually fun and is something that everybody should consider doing.”

Luciana Mendes is also leaving early for the University of Texas, but not for school. She will be starting practices and be busy with activities for the UT pom squad. She is one of the two freshmen who were selected to be a part of the 2010-11 squad and will be leaving for school on June 7, the day after graduation.

“It is really early for me to be leaving, but I couldn’t be more excited about it,” Mendes said. “I am most excited about getting to know the rest of the girls on the squad throughout the summer. They are a great group of girls and I can’t wait to dance with them.”

Leaving early for school is something very common among seniors at CHS. It is seen as a way to get ahead in school or sports, and in the end, is a very beneficial choice.

Staff Writer

For most high schools students, taking a foreign language class is an experience we’d never like to repeat. The amount of effort it takes to try and learn a new language at this point in anyone’s life is difficult; a fact science has proven. But for senior Kit Howeth, the difficulty of learning a new language and appreciating a unique culture is a siren’s song.

Most native English speaking students choose to study any of the “romance languages” which are based off of the same Latin used in our own language, thereby making it easier. Howeth, however, embarked on the journey of mastering the language of Japanese.

According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the U.S. Department of State, Japanese is one of the five hardest languages for a native English speaker to learn. This daunting title doesn’t even begin to daunt Howeth due to her love of the language and the culture.

“In middle school I had friends who spoke Japanese all the time and I loved listening to them,” Howeth said. “I love everything about their culture, from the cute pencils to the politeness and respect for elders.”

Anyone who is friends with Howeth is more than aware of her love for languages. Junior Christina Portillo, who shares Howeth’s passion for foreign languages, thinks Howeth will be able to grow as a Japanese major.

“[Languages] have opened the door for a want to travel and study abroad for Kit,” Portillo said. “After finishing French, she wanted to go to France. With Japanese, she wants to learn the language and immerse herself in the culture. Her dream has been to teach English in Japan since I met her, and I think that if she wants to accomplish that goal she will put in the effort to get it.”

As Portillo stated, Howeth’s dream job is to become an English teacher in Japan. Like most of us bright-eyed, bushy-tailed youngsters, Howeth wants to travel around the world, see new things, and experience the many cultures the world has to offer. But while for many of us this dream often remains merely a dream, Howeth plans to take action by majoring in Japanese and studying abroad during college.

“[I] definitely [plan on studying abroad during college],” Howeth said. “Lyon College has a program for students during their junior year where they can take a semester or a year abroad in any of three countries, one of them being Japan. When I heard about it I was like, ‘Sign me up for Japan!’”

Howeth’s fascination with foreign languages has been alive since middle school when she experience foreign languages such as Spanish and Korean on a daily basis thanks to friends.

“To me, English has always sounded too choppy,” Howeth said. “Whenever I heard any of my friends speaking Spanish or Korean it sounded like music to me; it was like their own secret code and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Along with the overall beauty of the language, Howeth finds herself fascinated by the Japanese culture, mainly through the ‘cutesy’ accessories such as pencils and bags. In fact, if you see Howeth in the hallway, you will more than likely spot her carrying her signature Japanese messenger bag.

“She’s always kind of been in to the cutesy Japanese stuff, but it really took off in the last year,” Portillo said.

Howeth’s love for Japanese items has bled in to her love for other elements of her life, including drawing through the Japanese pencils and pens Howeth collects.

And while languages are most definitely the new love of Howeth’s life, she will always have a soft spot for music. Howeth is a four year veteran of the CHS band and is also an active member of her church choir.

“I really have no idea what I want to minor in, but if I had to choose it would probably be something related to music,” Howeth said. “I’m not going to give up music as a part of my life.”

Howeth was offered scholarship money for her musical talents and academic performance by Lyon College in Batesville, Ark where she will pursue her major in Japanese in the fall.

“I was skeptical of Lyon at first because it’s in the middle of nowhere. I had to see it to believe it,” Howeth said. “I had already visited the University of Puget Sound [in Tacoma, Wash] and was really attached to it, but my father wanted to me to look at Lyon, and when I visited the campus, I fell in love.”

Howeth’s friends and family will look on as Howeth begins her new life in Batesville this fall and hope that her strong sense of self and independence will follow her as she forges a bond with her new life and love, Japanese.

Senior Natalie Wade’s dream after college is to become a coffee girl. Now, while that sounds like a job you do not need a degree in, being a coffee girl for an important producer is one of the first steps in order to become a major player in the media world down the road.

“I realize when I tell people specifically that after college my goal is to be a coffee girl they get a little confused,” Wade said. “But in order to have a chance to be a part of that world, you have to start out on the very bottom and work your way up.”

All through her life, Wade has always been fascinated with films, music and television. And, usually, students in Coppell who have dreams to be involved in that lifestyle joins the high school’s television show, KCBY.

“For a school to have such a great media program, it opens so many opportunities for students to figure out if they would like to do more with it in life,” senior KCBY member Taylor Vowell said. “Ever since Natalie started KCBY, it was obvious that that is where she belongs.”

KCBY offers everything from acting, filming, editing and producing so all students can find their niche. For Wade, she discovered her niche freshman year and now plans on majoring in Creative Producing in college.

“Natalie is a solid team member of the KCBY team, always producing quality work and willing to help other students with any questions they have,” KCBY adviser Irma Kennedy said.

Freshman year, Wade decided to wait to take her health credit and take a media credit to allow her to apply for KCBY the following next year. As a sophomore, she learned everything about media that the class had to offer. Once mastering the technological side, Wade then began producing many materials for the next three years.

“I have forever loved movies, but when I joined KCBY I realized I wasn’t a big fan of filming or acting, so the next obvious thing was producing,” Wade said. “After trying that role out, I found out that is where I was meant to be.”

After realizing that Wade wanted to be a producer when she grew up, she started looking into schools that had a focus major in the producing area. After a long search, Wade came across Chapman University, a liberal arts school in Orange, Calif. Wade visited the college, learned more about its film school and fell in love with it.

“Chapman has such a beautiful campus – right on the beaches in Orange County – and the school recently opened a new updated film school that had anything you could think of,” Wade said.

Chapman’s Dodge Film School specifically offers a program called Creative Producing to their students. This program combines the basic creative skills with the business, legal and organizational aspects of the entertainment industry. With an already small student body of 1,340 undergraduate and graduate students in the Dodge Film School, this program only allows a select few in every year – and Wade got in.

“This opportunity is right up [Natalie’s] alley, and the school picked the right person who will only continue to get better after learning so much here,” Kennedy said.

Besides being one of few students representing the United States, considering 30 other countries are represented at the university, Wade has been offered many scholarships that made her decision that much easier.

“It’s great that Natalie gets to do exactly what she wants to do in college” senior director Bayley Zarrephavar said. “Chapman is going to give her so many great opportunities within her field and she will go far in life.”

With her final decision to go to Chapman, Wade hopefully will receive the preparation to become a coffee girl to a major producer right out of college. Everyone has to start somewhere and, in the filming business, it includes lots of Starbucks runs.
