Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own. – Nikos Kazantzakis When Coppell Middle School North teacher DeLana Attaway, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma brain cancer in December, the news came as a shock to students who had grown close to the teacher who dedicated her life not only to making learning more enjoyable, but to creating a special bond with her students. “Everyone loves It’s a Wonderful Life, and when you realize your life has touched someone else’s, it is so humbling because you…

Hamilton has unfortunate relapse

By Tanner McCord Staff Writer Last night on Twitter, I had the misfortune of reading that Texas Rangers’ outfielder Josh Hamilton had an alcohol relapse. Reports say that Monday night (Jan. 30), Hamilton was spotted at a local bar drinking. The well known ball player’s last relapse with alcohol occured in 2009 when he was drunk in public and had some very incriminating photos surface. No pictures have been revealed and few details are known about the incident last week. Bob Sturm, host of “The Ticket” radio show, tweeted: “Josh Hamilton press conference will alter things at 1, but of course, that is pretty important.” Hopefully the press conference will provide some clarity to the…

Dallas emerges from drought conditions

By Jay Carroll Staff Writer After a long summer of temperatures of over 100 degrees for 71 days in a row, the drought conditions in Coppell and the rest of North Texas are officially over. Over the summer, it rarely rained. Combined with the scorching heat, this created one of the worst droughts in Texas history. The water level of lakes all over North Texas plummeted to record lows, Lake Lavon reached a point where you could see the bottom of the lake in some places. Even that the water of level of Lake Lavon has raised to just over five feet below full pool. This is still relatively low, but it is rising. Lake…

Register to make a change in Coppell

By Jordan Bickham Staff Writer As students in high school, some of us, myself included, do not care much about politics until they start affecting us personally.  One of these moments is when you turn 18 and the time to have your political opinion noticed  finally arrives.  While the Presidential Election is not for a while, you can still vote for the next best thing: the mayor of Coppell. This Saturday, Coppell is opening Municipal Officer Candidate filing until Monday Mar. 5.  Although you are probably not able to run for office just yet, you can be a part of the voting process that begins on May 12.  Of course, to vote you must be…

UIL realignment places Coppell in District 5-5A

SLCfootball

By Julianne Cauley News Editor Every two years, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) realigns the state’s athletic districts. This morning, Coppell was placed in District 5-5A with some familiar foes. Distrct 5-5A Coppell Denton Ryan Lewisville Lewisville Flower Mound Lewisville Hebron Lewisville Marcus Coppell is currently in District 7-5A with Southlake Carroll, Keller, Keller Fossil Ridge, Keller Central, Denton Guyer, Saginaw and Justin Northwest. The traditional rivalry between Coppell and Southlake Carroll will not occur in district play in the new alignment. However, the school is in Region I along with Coppell and they could go head-to-head in the playoffs or non-district play. Additional realigned districts and regions can be found here.

AP test sign up begins

Madison Ford Entertainment Editor Registration for this year’s AP tests have begun. Coppell High School offers numerous testing opportunities for those who have taken AP classes during the course of the year. In past years, the government has paid for part of every test taken, leaving students who pay by early registration only having to pay approximately $60 per exam. However, following a new government policy, prices have gone up significantly, rising to a steep $90 per exam (early registration). Despite this change in price, CHS students are still encouraged to take the exams for the classes they took.

Google Science Fair offers students alternative

By Ben Cowlishaw Online Copy Editor Through this morning and afternoon, the small gym was filled with science fair projects and their student creators. Participation in a Science Fair is a requirement in many science courses at the high school, and can also potentially be a Distinguished Achievement Program measure. The high school science fair came just a couple weeks after finals week and the holiday break, so many students find the almost exclusively out-of-class project to be especially demanding of their time. That is why some teachers have allowed their students to elect to participate in the Google science fair as a replacement. Instead of producing a physical tri-board and notebook, participants in the…

Police continue investigation on local serial rapist

B Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer Since October, Plano police have been tracking down a serial rapist who is accused of targeting alums of an African-American sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. DNA found at the scenes of the last three assaults have linked the string of attacks together, the victims of each being women in their mid 50′s to 60′s. However, police have been unable to identify a suspect. On Dec. 11, the television show America’s Most Wanted aired a screening on the fugitive and has also set up a website to alert the public to the yet unidentified man. Recently police released a statement asking the rapist to turn himself into the authorities. “Read your conscience, follow your conscience, turn yourself in so you can put this behind you,”…
