One Direction fever: Is it all looks?

Kimberly Del Angel Staff Writer Over the last couple of months I have heard or read “One Direction” well over a hundred times, perhaps more than any other words (well, aside from YOLO [You Only Live Once]) — and I’m not exaggerating. If you don’t know, One Direction is an increasingly popular English boy band well known for competing on the U.K.’s X Factor. And I must report, after reaching out of my musical comfort zone and listening to a couple of songs that my friends constantly raved about, I was disappointed to discover they were just a Bieber-Jonas mix. Now I’m probably going to have millions of angry girls tossing death threats my way, but I…

2012′s “The Great Gatsby” good timing for CHS Juniors

By Erica Rohde Staff Writer Hollywood is revisiting the story of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” which is amazing timing for those of the 21st century wanting a more visual taste of the book. The previous version made in 1974 is at least visually outdated. Zack Sherman’s AP/GT English classes finished reading and discussing the book. Mr. Sherman even showed us the online game (probably made in the 80s). It seems that Hollywood is touching base with middle school and high school classrooms. First 2012’s “Lincoln,” and now I have another reason to combine school with the theatre (sort of). “The Great Gatsby” will be released December 25 of 2012. Click here for “The…

Starring a whole host of familiar faces – stars like Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Capitan America and Scarlett Johansen as the Black Widow – the avengers is sure to draw attention from old fans and newcomers alike. Directed by Joss Whedon, who is famous among lovers of little known works Firefly and The Dollhouse, this will hopefully be a hit with fans and not just another formulaic Hollywood attempt to make a quick buck. Scoring an 8.9 on IMDb and a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes gives…

The Wanted Special Edition album released in the US

By Tolu Salako Staff Writer When the phrase, “Boy band,” comes to mind, I can not help but think of a group of boys doing awkward synchronized dance routines using too much autotune. However, that is not the case when it comes to the band, The Wanted. I could not help being so excited that one of my favorite British bands’ new album will be released in the US. However, I could not help but be a little disappointed when I realized only the Special Edition album would be released on iTunes. My hope that iTunes would release The Wanted’s previous two albums are officially gone and it sad that some US fans may not…

By Mary Whitfill Features Editor Coppell native and 2010 CHS graduate Sharon Mathai was eliminated on Tuesday’s episode of NBC’s The Voice after a performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova.” Determining its remaining four Top 8 semifinalists, coach Adam Levine eliminated Mathai and coach Cee Lo Green eliminated Cheesa Laureta. During the performances of their “last chance” song, fellow team member Katrina Parker, a singer from North Carolina, beat out Mathai after she performed “Perfect” by Pink. Christina Aguilera told Mathai she could “feel the nerves” in her performance, while Cee Lo said he liked her “aggression.” Levine told Parker and Mathai that making this decision “breaks [his] heart” and complimented Mathais’ “infectious” spirit. “I really…

Update: Mathai soars through another elimination on The Voice

By Mary Whitfill Features Editor The vocal teams of Hip-Hop artist Cee Lo Green and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine sent two more aspiring musicians home on tonight’s episode of NBC’s The Voice. Of the eight performing finalists, two were sent home by their coaches during the instant elimination rounds. Surviving this round of eliminations was Sharon Mathai, 18-year-old nursing student and Coppell native. Singing “I’m Like A Bird” by Nelly Furtado, Mathai’s coach Levine thought her performance was ‘great,’ and country artist Blake Shelton called it ‘beautiful.’ While they enjoyed the performance, Christina Aguilera was actually booed for elaborating on her preference of contestant Katrina Parker’s rendition of “Jar of Harts,” and told Mathai she…
