Cinco de Mayo

By: Chris Cummins

Staff Writer

Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican festival commemorating the unlikely victory of the Mexican Army over the French Army, takes place this Thursday. Originally celebrated by Mexican immigrants in California, as a means to celebrate their heritage, holiday is now a nationwide party celebrated in nearly all 21 states, yet only with limited appeal in Mexico itself.

Now, the festival is seen somewhere on the same level as St. Patrick’s Day and Oktoberfest, days meant to celebrate individual elements of the American Diaspora, such as Irish and German immigrants.  The festival is rapidly growing, with over 120 official celebrations counted throughout the states, and many more unofficial ones.
