Course selection season

Madison Ford
Staff Writer

Well, it’s that time again CHS. The course selection guides have been administered, and so has begun the season of course selection. Season may be a strong word, considering course selections are due next Tuesday, however, the small time frame creates a distinct mindset among students. In virtually every class period throughout the day, one can hear others, or even participate, in a discussion of class schedules. Comparing potential course selections with peers and inquiring others about classes they have taken and their level of difficulty and enjoyment is the main topic of recreational discussion throughout the week. Teachers, students and parents all seem to have an opinion and all seem to be coming at it from different perspectives.

The task of selecting my courses for the following year has always intrigued me. I find excitement in the prospect of selecting a schedule that is right for me. Although past years have been constricted by necessary, yet frustrating, pre-requisits, I have finally come to the milestone of senior year course selections. With four spaces open for electives, the opportunity to finally have a schedule that feeds my interests rather than Texas state requirements is exciting. The challenge of selecting the right course is still there, with the task of balancing electives that would look impressive for colleges and ones that I would sincerely enjoy, but what accompanies course selection this year, for me, is that I have the opportunity to play a deciding role in how my senior year, my last year of school in Coppell, is going to be run. And that my friends, is uplifting.

So don’t look at the upcoming course selections be too frustrating. Pick classes that you will enjoy, or ones that will get you into the right college, or ones that fulfill your pre-requisites (which I still find a tad absurd, but that discussion is for another day), but either way know that you are getting the opportunity to choose how you spend period of your life and your own plan for your future. We are given choice in the course selection process and choice in today’s world is power, so don’t put that power to waste, CHS, and choose wisely.
