CHS Hockey freezes opponents in Summer League

This summer, parts of Texas endured one of the hottest summers in many years, with temperatures reaching well above the 100 degree mark. While the rest of us suffered in the heat, the Coppell High School Hockey Team was tearing up the rink.

From May 16 to August 1 of this past summer, the Varsity and JV Gold hockey teams participated in a summer hockey league in which they competed against other schools in the area. Both teams competed in 10 games against schools such as Flower Mound, Marcus, and Plano. The Varsity and JV squads both competed admirably although the Varsity squad fared slightly better overall.

The Varsity team literally dominated their schedule, nearly running the table with 9-1 record. Coppell Varsity outscored their opponents a total of 39-14, a fantastic feat! Highlights of their schedule include a convincing 6-0 win over Arlington Wild, a satisfying 5-1 victory over rivals Southlake Carrol, and a 3-0 shutout against Marcus Red.

The Varsity team’s only loss of the Summer League occurred on the 3rd of their 10 matches. Flower Mound managed to outscore the Cowboys 3-1 in a disappointing game that was surely a heartbreaker for Coppell.

Though they fought hard, the JV team was unable to annihilate their opponents like Varsity did. The team ended up with a hard-fought 5-5 record and outscored their opponents a total of 36-32, not bad at all.  The team showed signs of greatness, however, when they obliterated a prestigious Marcus team by a whopping 9-0. At other times, the team appeared less powerful such as their 3-9 defeat at the hands of Arlington Wild.

Last season, the Cowboys won 3rd place at State Championships (see photo below) and 1st place in City Championship. Impressive 9-1 and 5-5 showings in the Summer League are a sign that this year’s Coppell Hockey Teams are back on track to achieve great things.

The 2010-2011 teams begin practice for the upcoming season on September 8 (Varsity) and September 9 (JV). The schedule for the ’10-’11 season is yet to be released, all though they should be posted here in the next few days.
