Homecoming Theme Controversy

By Erica Rohde

The first time I heard what the theme of this year’s homecoming of Coppell Texas was, I was a little taken back.  The title of the full week of homecoming is “Free to Ride Cowboy Pride.” Mr Hunt affirmed this but before he did, I hadn’t had anyone mention it to me beforehand. So most students believe that the full theme of Homecoming 2010 is “Party in the USA,” which is actually the name of the dance being held on Saturday September 11. In other words, 9/11.

The first thing I think of when I hear the phrase “Party in the USA” is Miley Cyrus’ song hit. I, personally, am not a huge fan of Miley Cyrus, and I’m sure many other students hold that same opinion. So is this really appealing to the student body?

And the dance’s theme also becomes confusing when trying to decifer what the intentions were. Some students may think it to be disrespectful towards the country, or just a little odd for an event like the Homecoming dance.

Dances are supposed to be fun and light hearted. Dont get me wrong, I think its really nice to promote awareness about the struggles of our country, but I look at Homecoming as a time to kick off the year and express the joys of our youth. We’re high schoolers, we want to just let go and have fun!

I went to some of the office members of the highschool, and some of the students.

“It’s bad, just because it falls on September 11th; I just don’t think our Homecoming should be tied into it. Wear camo, party, honoring veterans?” Mrs. Poe said.

The majority of the kids I came up to called it random. I guess if you look at the entire week, it’s patriotic. But the majority of the students are pumped for the dance. They’re mostly focused on what they will wear, the mums, etc.

So I think we need to focus on what really appeals to the student body. Maybe you could get patriotic and show school spirit, but not include a reference to a singer like Miley Cyrus, who alot of people may not like.
