After a very successful junior and senior year in track, receiving a bronze medal at the State tournament in 2009 and setting new records for Coppell High School in 2010, Jake Wohlford will be attending The University of Texas in the fall on a partial track scholarship.
Wohlford received offers from Virginia, Tulsa and Missouri before making a final decision on Texas.
“Out of all of the offers I got, Texas is one of the best schools academically and athletically, so that played a big part in my decision,” Wohlford said. “I also really like the coaching staff there and Austin is a really cool city.”
On top of running track, Wohlford was a starting safety on the varsity football team his senior year and was a very successful student throughout his high school career.
“Jake is a very determined individual. He works very hard to reach his goals,” Coach Don Kemp said.
His coaches are not the only ones who think highly of Wohlford. His teammates and friends would also agree that he is a determined individual.
“I’ve known Jake for a while and have played football, run track and been in classes with him and he definitely works harder than anyone I know,” senior Jeff Johnson said. “He is an awesome teammate and he really tries his best in everything he does.”
Even though Jake has already signed with Texas, he keeps striving to do his best at everything he does. When the track team went to the Region I meet in Lubbock on May 3-4, Jake placed first in the 300 meter hurdles and second in the 110 meter hurdles, which allowed him to qualify for the state meet in Austin on May 14-15.
“Even after Jake signed a letter of intent to run track at UT, he pushes himself to his limits,” Kemp said. He is very humble and helps the other hurdlers. He works hard in the classroom as well.”
With Texas being his “dream school”, Jake was more than happy to be able to receive a scholarship to run track there next year.
“I wasn’t really expecting any offers from Texas because so many people want to go there and it is such a competitive school,” Wohlford said. “I was really grateful and happy when I was notified that they were looking at me and that I could potentially get a scholarship from them. I am more than ready for next year and to continue to run track at such a great school.”
