Today, the University of Texas at Arlington is making plans for their new Special Events Center that will be built on the east side of the campus.

According to a UTA news release, will feature a court for UTA’s basketball and volleyball teams and will host commencement and community events.

The project was initially approved the UT system’s board of regents in November of 2009, and the 218,000-square-foot center is expected to open in 2012.

Arlington Mayor Robert Chuck will be with students attending events, which include a reception immediately before the 2:30 groundbreaking. UTA President James D. Spaniolo will lead the ceremony.

Those driving near the site between 12:30 and 5 p.m. will have to take a detour because Pecan Street at UTA Boulevard and Third Street will be closed. The detour will follow Center Street.
