My Series of Unfortunate Events

It seems that unfortunate events follow me, or rather, the places I attempt to go. There is not really an explanation I can come up with, other than the fact that my fate has a knack for picking the right places at the wrong times.

First, it started with Mumbai. It was my sophomore year and we were planning to go for a few days. Instead, we luckily opted for Shanghai. As I sat in the airport, contemplating as to why we avoided Mumbai, bombings flashed up on the screen. As it turns out, Muslim terrorists from Pakistan were in the middle of their infamous 2008 tyraid, blowing up structures and taking foreigners hostage. My dad was thankful something compelled us to stay away. I kept questioning why we were lucky enough to evade the situation.

Secondly, on September 10, 2001 we were planning to visit Washington D.C. My dad went alone instead, had his meeting at the Pentagon, and returned home the same night. The next morning, September 11th occurred. Yet again, we thwarted a tragic situation.

Lastly, my flight for Chile is scheduled March 30. Given the recent earthquake and subsequent airport closing, it seems I won’t be making that trip after all. I am deeply sadnedd, mostly due to the fact yet another country is suffering. However, it leaves me to wonder yet again if this is just coincidence or a culmination of a bad fate I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid.

In the future, hopefully the same holds true.
