Sister Wendy turns 80
By Henna Khan
The most renown art-loving nun of all time truned 80 on her birthday, Feb. 25., and a celebration was indeed held in honor of her new age.
Sister Wendy’s sister, Pamela, was not able to attend Wendy’s birthday party. The passport had not arrived, so she missed her flight.
Sister Wendy Beckett, born Feb. 25 1930, is a South African-born British art expert, consecrated virgin and contemplative hermit who became an unlikely celebrity during the 1990s, presenting a series of acclaimed art history documentaries for the BBC. If you are a student enrolled in the Advenced Placement Art History course at Coppell High School, you are sure to be introduced to her through a series of videos that display her peculiar take on art.
Wendy leads a contemplative lifestyle, and currently lives in a caravan on the grounds. Despite a few interactions, she dedicates her life solely to monastic solitude and prayer, but allows herself two hours of work per day.
Healthy and happy with her art-observing lifestyle, Wendy celebrated her 80th birthday withour her sister Pamela, but hopefully next year she will be able to celebrate with everyone.
