Mock drafting NFL’s 1st round

The New Orleans Saints took home the Lombardi Trophy and wrapped up the NFL’s regular season against the Indianapolis Colts. Now it’s time to turn our attention to the draft.
Not that I’m any expert, but with the little knowledge of the NFL that I do have and some research help, I’ve formulated a rough outline of how the selections could fall come April. It’s all just a guess estimate.
1. St. Louis – Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle. He’s by far the best lineman in the draft and the Rams were 27th against the run last season. They could also take quarterback Sam Bradford.
2. Detroit – Gerald McCoy, defensive tackle. The Lions got their franchise quarterback last year with Matthew Stafford and tight end stand out Brandon Pettigrew, now they need to retool the defense, starting with McCoy. Safety Eric Berry is also an option here.
3. Tampa Bay – Eric Berry, safety. Berry is maybe the best all around player in the whole draft, he’s a dynamic playmaker. The Buccaneers would much rather have one of the two defensive tackles, but if their off the board, Berry seems right.
4. Washington – Sam Bradford, quarterback. Jason Campbell isn’t the answer, Bradford could be. He most likely won’t be able to jump in right away but he is a franchise quarterback.
5. Kansas City – Russell Okung, offensive tackle. The Chiefs have multiple needs to fill, but offensive line seems to be most pressing. Okung is a good all around blocker; he can play left or right tackle. Wide Receiver Dez Bryant and safety Rolando McClain are possibilities here.
6. Seattle – Derrick Morgan, defensive end. Morgan is effective against both the run and pass; he’s got the prototypical size for the NFL. The Seahawks have an interesting pick here; they could go many different ways, including either quarterback Jimmy Clausen or wide receiver Dez Bryant.
7. Cleveland – Joe Haden, cornerback. Haden seems to be a consensus here, they Browns have a lot of issues in the secondary the past couple of seasons. He’s a shutdown corner who can step in right away.
8. Oakland – Anthony Davis, offensive tackle. No one can ever know what Al Davis is going to do, I’m not even sure he knows half the time, but the Raiders have to choose someone. Typically Davis will go with speed and athletic ability but the tackle position has been a problem for the Raiders. If available, Derrick Morgan is an option.
9. Buffalo – Jimmy Clausen, quarterback. The Bills need a franchise quarterback and a leader in the huddle. Clausen has good upside and a lot of potential. Outside linebacker Sergio Kindle is also an option here.
10. Denver – Rolando McClain, inside linebacker. McClain has the size, speed and strength for the next level, not to mention great athletic ability. He can play inside or outside, he can immediately come in and play right away.
11. Jacksonville – Brian Price, defensive tackle. It’s a big draft for defensive tackles, Price has a ton of upside and he’s quick off the ball. If either should fall, Joe Haden or Derrick Morgan are options here.
12. Miami – Jason Pierre-Paul, defensive end. Paul is an ideal fit in Miami’s 3-4 defense with his supreme ability to rush the passer as well as drop back in coverage. Another possibility here is outside linebacker Sergio Kindle.
13. San Francisco –Bryan Bulaga, offensive tackle. The definite need for the 49ers is at the tackle position, now which one they will take is mystery. I think Bulaga is the best left on the board. Tackle Trent Williams is also an option here.
14. Seattle – C.J. Spiller, running back. The Seahawks lack any offensive explosion, which doesn’t strike fear into any defensive coordinator’s game plan. Spiller can add big plays by the plenty.
15. NY Giants – Brandon Spikes, inside linebacker. The Giants would love see Rolando McClain fall to them at 15, but it’s unrealistic. The next best thing is Spikes, who has falling on some draft boards of late but is still the second best ILB in this class. Running back C.J. Spiller is a possibility here.
16. Tennessee – Dez Bryant, wide receiver. The Titans don’t have too many holes as a team, but the wide out position is probably their biggest. Bryant is the best receiver in the draft without question and could play right away.
17. San Francisco – Everson Griffin, defensive end. The 49ers would love to get Brandon Spikes and add him with Patrick Willis to their linebacking core. However, if he’s off the board, the 49ers need an edge rusher.
18. Pittsburgh – Earl Thomas, safety. When Troy Polamalu went down last season, the Steelers had no one to fill his shoes. Thomas has terrific ball skills as well as great tackling ability; he’s got good speed and plays the game fast.
19. Atlanta – Carlos Dunlap, defensive end. There are very mixed opinions on Dunlap, he’s a great talent but has fallen off some draft boards due to off the field incidents and an inconsistent junior season. He could be an All-Pro if he is developed well.
20. Houston – Taylor Mays, safety. The style of defense that the Texans play allows opposing teams to take shots down field, that’s where Mays will come in and make them rethink coming over the middle. Mays is top 10 talent but has been criticized after his senior season for his play.
21. Cincinnati – Golden Tate, wide receiver. The Bengals have accumulated plenty of young talent of the past few drafts and now need to look at the other side the ball. Tate is a big play receiver with good hands. He could really help bolster the receiving corps in Cincinnati. Tight end Jermaine Gresham is a possibility here as well.
22. New England Patriots – Sergio Kindle, outside linebacker. It’s no secret the Patriots need help on defense; even more pressing is their need for quarterback pressure. Kindle can provide that in a big way, he can stand up in a 3-4 or put his hand down in a 4-3, he’s got great speed and athletic ability off the edge. Linebacker Jerry Hughes and safety Taylor Mays are options here.
23. Green Bay – Trent Williams, offensive tackle. Talk about a team with a glaring need on the offensive line, it’s the Packers. Williams may be a steal this late in the first round; he has a lot of potential and could be All-Pro during his career.
24. Philadelphia Eagles – Ricky Sapp, outside linebacker. The Eagles don’t have any huge areas of need, but their linebacking core is mix of has been’s and probably never will be’s. It’s time they get top notch talent.
25. Baltimore – Jerry Hughes, outside linebacker. Hughes has the chance to be a super star in the NFL, he may be off the board by the time the Ravens make this pick but if he’s there, they would love to have him.
26. Arizona – Bruce Campbell, offensive tackle. Campbell is a bit raw overall, but the Cardinals need help on the offensive line. Arizona also needs a speed rusher on the outside, linebacker Brandon Graham is an option.
27. Dallas – Mike Iupati, offensive tackle. Not a sexy pick for the Cowboys but much needed. Dallas has, not many, but a few glaring holes and this one of them, as is safety and wide receiver. If somehow Earl Thomas is still on the board, he’s the guy here otherwise I say Iupati.
28. San Diego – Jahvid Best, running back. This pick may make the most sense of any in the first round, with LaDainian Tomlinson’s likely departure and Sproles inability to carry a full workload, Best can step in right away. Possibility becoming a franchise back.
29. NY Jets – Arrelious Benn, wide receiver. Benn will give quarterback Mark Sanchez another option on the perimeter, he’s a downfield threat that can get by defenders. The Jets also need an upgrade at the rush linebacker position since Vernon Gholston (6th overall pick in 2008) has not yet recorded a sack in his NFL career.
30. Minnesota – Colt McCoy, quarterback. The Vikings need a franchise quarterback, badly. McCoy’s game fits Minnesota’s system well, short to intermediate throws with emphasis on accuracy. If Favre doesn’t retire, McCoy can get a year or two learning the system with his tutelage before taking over the reins, if Favre does, then the Vikings will have to deal with Tarvaris Jackson for awhile.
31. Indianapolis – Dan Williams, defensive tackle. The Colts could use an upgrade in the middle of their defense, Williams can jump in and help right away. Also an option is center Maurkice Pouncey.
32. New Orleans – Brandon Graham, outside linebacker. Everything points to the Saints taking an outside linebacker, their defense was much improved this season but age is creeping in on the linebacking corps. It’s either Graham or Sean Weatherspoon.
