Cowboys topple Dragons, end district slide
Staff Writer
Cowboys basketball was able to end their losing streak at three games on Tuesday, squeezing by Southlake Carroll 48-47.
Coppell was able to even its district record at 3-3, good for fourth place in District 6-5A. If nothing changes in the standings in the last four games, the Cowboys will qualify for Class 5A playoffs in late February.
The game was considered do or die for Coppell, who after the win is two games up on fifth place Southlake.
Coppell was led by senior captain Andrew Bourg, who scored 17 for the Cowboys and was the only Cowboy to score more than 7. Southlake had two double digit scorers but were unable to keep the pressure on the Cowboys in the fourth quarter.
Tied at 24 at half time, the Dragons were able to take a three point lead heading into the fourth. Coppell executed well down the stretch, however, forcing an offensive foul in the last minute and icing the game with two clutch free throws by junior Andrew Rexroat.
The win has put Coppell in a good position moving forward towards the playoffs, and they Hebron on Friday.
