As the wintery weather cames blowing into Coppell, as did the sounds of holiday cheer.  Or the notes of holiday cheer, rather.  CHS choir held their annual winter concert on Tuesday Dec. 17. With acappella choir, select women’s, treble choir, men’s choir, Madrigals, Vivacé!, Bel Canto and Brava filed onto the stage to entertain the audience.’

With the seats crowded with family and friends, the above choirs sang and danced their way through the show that began at 7 pm. A special guest performance by Coppell Middle School North’s North Select choir brought in the concert on a good note. Performing “Estrella Briante” and “Il Le Né, Le Divin Enfant”, this choir holds a tone beyond their years.

Following North Select, CHS’ Concert Choir sang their way through “Carol of the Bells”, always a crowd holiday favorite, and “The Winter’s Night”. Treble Choir later performed “Ding-a Ding-a Ding”; a complicated array of quick and repetitive words created a lovely bell sound throughout the song.  Combined Women’s Choirs, Select Women, and Varsity Women then entranced the audience with more holiday tunes. These choirs are all compiled of the top singers in each of the women choirs.

Madrigals’ Choir, after having just performed their 15th annual Feast “A Christmas Fruitcake and Other Weighty Matters” on Dec. 4 and 5, performed selections from the feast “ Sing We Now of Christmas”, “To Him We Sing”, and “Silent Night”.

“It’s been really hectic trying to get the Feast together and then having the Winter Concert just after,” senior Grayson Hollis said. Grayson played the role of the King in this year’s Madrigals’ choir. “It was a good show, but I’m glad it’s done.”

Following the Madrigals’ performance, Bel Canto, 9 member varsity ensemble and part of the A’Cappella Choir, performed “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Cradle Hymn” followed by Vivacé!’s rendition of “Sleigh Ride”. Vivacé! sang and dance their way through a rendition of “Sleigh Ride”, choreographed to break from the typical choral atmosphere.

“We had our Dessert Show just a few weeks before this concert, so we were already used to practicing song and dance together,” senior Vivacé! captain Libbie Ainsworth said. “Our part of the show turned out pretty well, I think.”

Bel Canto and Brava, both all girls a’cappella closed the concert with their own individual holiday tunes.

CHS Choir sang their way into new decade but upcoming events leave them in preparation for the new year. The Texas Music Educator Association (TMEA) Convention & All-State Choir in San Antonio on Feb. 10 -14  and UIL Solo & Ensemble at Townview High School on Feb. 20. Apart from contests, Vivace! will be preparing for their  Spring Show on Apr. 22-23, and Brava will be starting a new tradition of their first annual Brava Show on  May 14. CHS Choir, as a whole will hold their last performance of the school year on May 18, their Spring Choir Concert.

“I’m looking forward to what all we have planned for 2010,” senior Madrigals captain Dinah Smith said. “It should be a successful year.”

With 2009 and the Holiday Season behind us, 2010 is a promise for new musical aspirations for CHS choir.
