Bowl maddness

Games to Watch

1. Citi BCS National Championship Game
No. 2 Texas vs. No. 1 Alabama
8 p.m. ET, Jan. 7

Well this one is an obvious pick with two undefeated teams meeting for the championship. While Boise, TCU and Cincinnati all had great years you can’t ask for more than two undefeated teams meeting from two of the major conferences. The game will feature a matchup of the potent passing attack of McCoy and Shipley and the stingy Alabama defense.

2. Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

No. 6 Boise State vs. No. 4 TCU

8 p.m. ET, Jan. 4

Yes, it’s a rematch of last season’s Poinsettia Bowl, in which the Horned Frogs defeated the Broncos 17-16, which happened to be Boise St.’s only loss on the year. The intrigue here though is in the fact that one of these teams is going to finish the year undefeated, but without the title. So who ends the year unbeaten and possibly ranked second in the country.

3. Allstate Sugar Bowl

No. 5 Florida vs. No. 3 Cincinnati

8:30 p.m. ET, Jan. 1

Another game featuring an unbeaten team not in the championship should make for an exciting watch. Florida enters having only lost the SEC title game to Alabama. Cincinatti was a last second field goal away from switching places with Texas, but instead they find themselves in the Sugar Bowl with a new head coach on the way. So the question will be how does the Cincinatti team play following all that has happened in recent weeks.

4. Rose Bowl Game Presented by Citi

No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 7 Oregon

4:30 p.m. ET, Jan. 1

The Buckeyes avoided playing an SEC team in a BCS bowl game, but the Ducks might be as fast as the Florida and LSU teams that have manhandled the Buckeyes in recent years. The Rose Bowl is always a big game to watch though and a great way to start the New Year.

5. FedEx Orange Bowl

No. 10 Iowa vs. No. 9 Georgia Tech
8 p.m. ET, Jan. 5

Georgia Tech has the triple-option spread offense, while at times, Iowa doesn’t seem to have any offense. This is really a statement game for both conferences as the ACC and Big Ten have both struggled recently in big bowl games.

6. Konica Minolta Gator Bowl

No. 16 West Virginia vs. Florida State

1 p.m. ET, Jan. 1

It’s the Bobby Bowden Bowl, as Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will coach the Seminoles for the final time. It’s fitting that his final opponent is West Virginia, the school where he coached from 1970 to ’75.

7. Capital One Bowl

No. 13 Penn State vs. No. 12 LSU

1 p.m. ET, Jan. 1

A great matchup of traditional football powers.

8. MAACO Las Vegas Bowl
No. 18 Oregon State vs. No. 14 BYU

8 p.m. ET, Dec. 22

BYU plays in the Las Vegas Bowl for the fifth consecutive season having gone 2-2 in the previous four they face an Oregon State team that was one win away from a Rose Bowl appearnce.

9. Chick-fil-A Bowl
No. 11 Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee
7:30 p.m. ET, Dec. 31

Another statement game for the ACC and a big game for a program in Tennessee that is trying to make a rebound after a terrible year last season.

10. AT&T Cotton Bowl

No. 19 Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss

2 p.m. ET, Jan. 2

Both teams had lofty preseason goals that were never met, but a win in the Cotton Bowl could go a long way in making up for some of the letdown.

11. Pacific Life Holiday Bowl

No. 20 Arizona vs. No. 22 Nebraska

8 p.m. ET, Dec. 30

Ndamukong Suh…

12. Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl

Houston vs. Air Force

Noon ET, Dec. 31

The number one overall offense and passing attack in Houston versus the top passing defense in a rematch of last years game.

13. San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl

No. 23 Utah vs. California

8 p.m. ET, Dec. 23

Utah goes for nine straight bowl victories after upsetting Alabama in the Sugar Bowl a season ago.

14. Meineke Car Care Bowl

No. 17 Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina

4:30 p.m. ET, Dec. 26

After faltering in the second half against Cincinatti blowing a chance at a BCS game how will Pitt respond?

15. GMAC Bowl

Central Michigan vs. Troy

7 p.m. ET, Jan. 6

This one should be a shoot out as Troy finished third nationally in total offense and Dan LeFevour the Central Michigan quarterback set the NCAA record for career touchdowns earlier this season.

Top 10 players to watch

1. Ndamukong Suh- The best defensive player in college football, should be the number one player taken in the 2010 draft.
2. CJ Spiller- The most electric player in college football, watch from kickoff till the end to see a top notch performance.
3. Toby Gerhart- We shall see if he is motivated after the Heisman snub and see if he can handle a stout Oklahoma defense.
4. Ryan Mathews- A player likely looked over by many. Mathews always runs hard and will fly under the radar until he bursts onto the NFL scene next season.
5. Noel Devine- If he declares look for him to follow in the footsteps of old backfield mate, Steve Slaton.
6. Eric Berry- Hits hard. Intercepts plenty of passes. And scores defensive touchdowns. A possible preview for his promising NFL career.
7. Tim Tebow- This could be the last time Tebow dominates an offense as quarterback. If nothing else, watch to see the last game of possibly the best college football player of all time.
8. Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley- The best quarterback and receiver in the land try to pick apart a great Alabama defense. While trying to raise their individual draft stock.
9. Mark Ingram- We will clearly see if Ingram deserves the Heisman over Toby Gerhart if he plays against Texas like he did against Florida.
10. Mardy Gilyard- Disgruntled after Brian Kelly went to Notre Dame. Expect a huge game from one of the most complete players in college football against Florida.
