November 3, 2009 is the Texas Constitutional Amendment Election day. Eleven proposed constitutional amendments will go before Texas voters in this election.
These proposals have passed through Texas Legislature with a two-thirds vote. Now, in order to be included in the Texas state constitution, these eleven amendments must gain the approval of voters.
Sadly, the Dallas County Elections Department estimated about a 3 percent voter turnout today. This is not too unusual due to the fact that off year elections are notorious for low voter turnouts. Still, according to Dallas County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet, this is one of the lowest Dallas has seen in the past twenty years.
As students, it is imperative get informed on the issues. Even if you are not yet of age to vote, nag your parents to take initiative to go visit the voting polls. If you don’t want to wake up on November 4th wondering “How did that law pass?” then you need to let your voice be heard. As former president John F. Kennedy once said, “Citizenship is an office.”
