Military recruitment in high school is completely acceptable
Ellen Cameron Staff Writer As far as life choices go, serving in the armed forces is a far cry above flipping patties. It’s an honorable career, and by no means a death sentence. Moreover, it is a valid and traditional path to take after high school for financial or personal reasons, and military recruiters have every night to come into our schools. Other colleges come to schools, and all the propaganda basically blazons the same essential messages: our school will make you a better leader, smarter, stronger, more experienced. The same glossy tripe can be applied to armed services; it’s not like the Army has some slightly dubious recruiting hook. The pull-up bar may be…
City of Coppell to host dedication ceremony to fallen officers
by Divya Kumar News Editor This Friday, December 4th, a dedication ceremony for the newly built Fallen Officer Memorial will be held, beginning at 10 AM. This ceremony is in honor of those fallen officers in the city of Coppell as well as to dedicate the opening of the new memorial. The memorial, located in front of Coppell Justice Center in the middle of the city, was commissioned in July of 2008. The idea for it began when officers in the Coppell Police Department requested its approval and gathered $16,000 for its construction. Over $10,000 of these funds was raised through an earlier fundraiser—the police motorcycle competition—held in April of this year. Along with this,…
A career in cartridges for Carelock
Satvika Ananth Staff Writer Video by Gus Vangalis, KCBY When junior Zac Carelock was 10 years old, he received a laminator cartridge for his birthday as a gag gift. Little did he know this joke would lead him to create a business which he still runs today. After exchanging this cartridge for a small laminator, Carelock began playing with it and learning how to use it while in the fifth grade. One day, he went with his grandmother to visit his grandfather at his nursing home, and brought the laminator with him. “I had just brought it along to mess with it, and we were talking to some of the other residents, who mentioned that…
TOMS club sponsors shoe drive for local organization
by Divya Kumar News Editor It is not unusual to see boxes and posters asking for donations of everyday items around the school. However, those created by the TOMS club in order to benefit their first ever shoe drive serve a slightly different purpose than many ordinary fundraisers. The TOMS club, founded by juniors Sarah Hillier and Lydia White, is based off of the TOMS Shoe organization, through which when a pair of canvas shoes are bought by a customer, another pair of the shoes are shipped to Africa to a child in need. Widely popular among customers due to not only their charitable cause, but also their comfort, Hillier and White attempted to push…
Heartbreak in Birdville
by Blake Seitz Sports Editor In what can only be described as a bitter defeat, Coppell lost to the Arlington Colts on a last second field goal, ending the Cowboy’s historic playoff run. The final score was 31-29. The first half of play was dominated by the Colts. After the Cowboy’s first drive collapsed, Arlington’s offense, led by senior quarterback Matt Joeckel, drove the length of the field to the Coppell one-yard line. After three consecutive stops on the goal line, Joeckel showed his prodigious ability (he has signed with Texas A&M) by lobbing a ball over the middle of a collapsing line for an Arlington score. Coppell’s second drive was just as impotent as…
