Don’t stop YAC-ing

By: Loren Hughes Last year, the Coppell High School library began their first year as participants in the Youth Adult Choice program, (YAC). This year, librarian Lex Anne Seifert hopes to remind students to not forget about this program, and to encourage their voices to be heard through the books read. CHS was one of four high schools in the country selected to be a part of the YAC program. The program entitles students to read certain books and to fill out a ballot rating the book they have read. Throughout the year, Seifert will continue to keep tallies on the scores turned in and then report the results to the International Reading Association (IRA). The…

Fall brings flu season to CHS

Rebecca Neumann Staff Writer I love fall. It means falling leaves and pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween and good football. But with all the good it brings, there is a dark side to these mostly wonderful months: flu season. I’m sure you’ve noticed. There is a least one person gone in every one of my classes. It’s enough to make you want to chronically wash your hands. I myself have a usually strong immune system, but I am concerned. It’s impossible to keep up with make-up work after missing school for a few days, much less a week if you catch the swine flu. I would like to urge all of you to please take some…

No. 8 in the area, No. 1 in our hearts

By Mary Whitfill Staff Writer Coppell High School was made proud when it ranked among the best in North Texas. A non-profit organization, Children at Risk, rates the best public schools in the state, based on everything from class size to test scores. Though many organizations rank top schools, Children at Risk use more measures than most. The rankings are dependent on 12 different variables, such as number of dual credit students and students who graduated with honors. Many schools were left out of the race due to insufficient data, but CHS came in eighth.  Children at Risk calculates its own statistics based on the most recent available. The graduation percentage is calculated on students…

District 6-5A tennis might come to three-way tie

By Gaby Moran Staff Writer Team tennis  has been going on for a few weeks now and is coming close to end. With only one district match left for everyone, the last week is crucial. Flower Mound Marcus, Coppell and Flower Mound have all beaten South Lake Carroll, Hebron and Lewisville but the record against each other is making things complicated in the sense that there can be a three-way tie. During week 3, Coppell and  Marcus played each other and Coppell lost 9-10. While this was a sad defeat, it did not guarantee Marcus any rankings. During week 4, Flower Mound and Marcus played eachother and Flower Mound beat Marcus 12-7. As of now, Flower Mound…

Cowgirls lose to Hawks

By Andy Tabor The Coppell Cowgirls lost to the Hebron Hawks in five games Tuesday night at Hebron 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, and 9-15.  The Cowgirls had previously beaten Southlake Carroll the Friday before for their first district win. Against Hebron, the Hawks came out with a lot of fire power and motivation.  The Cowgirls tried desperately to match the intensity but were unable to sustain many steady runs.  The Hawks are now now tied atop the district with Marcus with a 2-0 record.  The Cowgirls play Marcus Friday at home and need a win to keep pace with the 6-5A leaders.

Recap of Homecoming 2009 Dress Up Days

By Luciana Mendes Staff Writer In the spirit of homecoming, Coppell High School transformed into a time machine. It seems to be that the styles of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s never graduated. The week started off well with Monday’s dress up theme “Psychedelic 60’s”. Students sported tye-die shirts, peace signs, and bright colors that were popular in the 60’s. Teachers, secretaries and administrators even participated in the excitement by digging through their closet. “I absolutely love dressing up for the theme of each day,” substitute teacher Nan Fullinwider said. “I lived through the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s so it’s been a blast to go back and reminisce. You just have to have…

Dallas Cowboys cage the Panthers Monday night

By Mary Whitifll Staff Writer Row 8, seat 1, section 119. I couldn’t have asked for a better seat to watch the 2nd in season home game of America’s team. The Cowboys exercised their new stadium, coming out with their first at home win of the season with 21-7 over the Carolina Panthers. The Dallas Cowboys had a bit of a rough start with Tony Romo throwing to what seemed like open air, Marion Barber not playing due to a muscle strain, and Dallas not putting up a single number on the score board until the second half. Acting as starts of the show, Felix Jones gained 94 yards before being benched for a knee…

Rachel’s Challenge to challenge CHS on Oct. 1

By: Loren Hughes On Oct. 1, an inspirational program called Rachel’s Challenge is coming to Coppell High School. The meaning behind Rachel’s Challenge originated when student Rachel Scott, 17, was murdered during the shootings at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rachel’s Challenge was founded by her father, Darrell Scott, who immediately began speaking about school violence only weeks after his daughter’s death. It is said that the program has prevented suicides, bullying and up to at least three planned school shootings. “Other schools in the Metroplex started Rachel’s Challenge and reported student change,” associate principal Leanne Dorhout said. “Students who attended the presentation before enjoyed the idea because they liked doing a simple…

Gossip Girl fails to excite

Staff Writer Paige Wilson This week Gossip Girl failed to deliver its usual jaw dropping excitment. In fact this season’s ratings are falling from previous ones. Everything seems to be repeating and things that are supose to deliver are falling flat. This week we saw Gorgenia and Dan “hook up”. In Dan’s eyes it is nothing serious while Gorgenia is going into crazy stalker mode. It is just a repeat from the ending of season one.  Instead of stalking Dan and ruining Serena’s life she is stalking Dan and ruining Blair’s life. Scott chose to tell Rufus he was his son’s brother instead of telling him that he really is his son. Then he just…

Irony abounds in this week

By Ellen Cameron Staff Writer This week, September 26 to October 3, is Banned Books Week. It’s also National Chimney Safety Week; the juxtaposition of these two conjures images of Fahrenheit 451. Important religious holidays this week are Yom Kippur and Dussehra. Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement for Jews, and is the most religious day of the year. Yom Kippur is the last day of the High Holy Days and features rigorous fasting and prayer. Dussehra is a Hindu holiday in Nepal and is also known as Vijayadashamib, Dashain or Dasserra. The day makes the beginning of the Harvest season and traditionally, clay statues are submerged in the river. As…
